In Texas, am I allowed to put the following without registering a firm and solicit tax business with the below legally?

Go to the state disciplinary board and look up cases over the past few months. That should provide some interesting information.

Or email the board. They may provide an answer.

It's to my understanding you don't need to be a CPA to do taxes in any state or to solicit business, let alone register a firm; however, Texas can be an oddball so do not take this as legal advice.

Email the board, or better yet, contact a lawyer.

Not sure about Texas but it is my understanding that anyone in NYS that uses CPA in their firm name needs to be a registered firm if they perform accounting services, which basically means if they use numbers. Sole props need to be registered firms. Firm registration is cheap here, and safer than risking your license.

It also depends on where you're conducting business and what type of business you do.

Generally, using numbers vs. assuring the numbers have completely different requirements.

With an individual Texas CPA license but no firm license, you may use the term “CPA” or “Certified Public Accountant” in association with unlicensed firms that offer services such as financial consulting, tax preparation and bookkeeping services, in advertisements or written promotional material (e.g. business cards), so long as you include a written disclaimer: “this firm is not a CPA firm.” This disclaimer must be included in conspicuous proximity to the name of the unlicensed entity and be printed in type not less bold than that contained in the body of the advertisement or written statement. See Board Rule 501.81(d).

I reached out to the board and they attached the same paragraph you did jpj230. I think it is kind of ridiculous that you cannot put CPA after your name on a business card and hand it out with the intent of acquiring tax business without putting “this is not a CPA firm” in a “conspicuous location near the name”……its like shooting yourself in the foot immediately

Guess I will have to register as a firm……….
