apj256Member@acamp hahaha
Just wondering if there's someone else who gets the urge to get in the mats, instead of studying.

taxgeek83Participant@acamp – Yes! Haha!
I started training BJJ earlier this year – love it! I'm not opposed to skipping training in the last couple of weeks before my exams, but it's definitely a good way to de-stress. And the guys I train with are beyond awesome!
P.S. It makes watching UFC fights a lot more interesting when you know what a triangle is. And an arm bar. And a rear naked choke. π

Thats so cool! What color belt are you? I train under the 10th planet jiu jitsu system.
I'm thinking of getting an amateur fight.

apj256Member@taxgeek83 It is a great way to relive stress, not just for this exam but for anything in life. Guys who train martial arts are always cool. Getting beat up and always learning new think will humble you.
Sometimes I beat Joe Rogan in anticipating a submission or a transition. My girlfriend get impressed when I do that hahaha

Lion_of_the_RockParticipantBJJ and Krav for 2 yrs. Retired when I became a dad due to lack of free time. Always good to know what to do in case that audit client decides to mug you in the parking lot.

taxgeek83ParticipantI think the program I train under is Pedro Sauer – and has something to do with the Gracie family. I'm still trying to figure out how that all works. How does that differ from the methods y'all have mentioned?
@Lion – Self-defense is precisely the reason I got into it – that and it's fun! I travel quite a bit for work though, and it's a nice skill to develop.
@apj – The guys I know are generally pretty impressed when I tell them I started training. I haven't used it as a pickup line yet – more of a warning to potential suitors. π j/k!

taxgeek83Participant@Skynet – You always make me smile – but this. In the context of BJJ, makes me laugh.

leglockParticipantI stopped training bjj completely to pursue my cpa. Between college classes i needed and actually passing the test, it was two yrs. our instructor is a world champ from brazil so we often have world champs at the gym. just started training again 2 weeks ago after 2 yrs off. Been getting my butt kicked everyday. First time i competed i took second and didnt focus too heavily on my cardio. Next tourny, being the lazy ass i am, i trained my cardio even less. First match i goto throw my opponent and didnt move him an inch. I knew i was in trouble. My great plan was stall and hope to get in a scramble and end up scoring. Thirty secs left i induce a scramble and immediately am out of breath and realize things are gonna b real bad. Got caught in a clock chock and the ref disnt see me tappin so my opponent disnt let go. I was lucky enuff to not pass out but i couldnt swallow without immense pain for two weeks. Lesson learned tho. Just like the cpa exam, if u dont prepare properly the result will probably not b good. Next tourny is in march and im so looking forward to competing

apj256Member@Jeff Correct, my coach got his black belt under him. If theres a 10th planet gym near you, give it a try. Its a bit different from traditional BJJ but super effective.
@taxgeek83 Thats a good system your under. My system is no gi, it mostly based for MMA.
hahaha. They'll know not to step out of line when you tell them that π jk
So far my CPA journey is the same as my jiu jitsu one. When I first started, I got destroyed by 12 year olds. That didn't discourage me, I kept on going for more. Eventually I was able to hang with them and later the adults. I'm no black belt (purple belt) but I can finally survive with the advance guys. My first three exams beat me up but slowly I'm getting the hang of it. Like I did in jiu jitsu, if i keep at it…I'll be able to pass π
So for everyone struggling, don't let that 12 year old beat your a**!!

ridiqlsMember10th planet? Nice.. you train at the hollywood location? I also train in BJJ and MMA. Less kickboxing and striking now and more bjj. I don't train at 10p but I use the rubberguard and 10p stuff cause I think Eddie's a genius. I'm subscribed to Mastering the System videos and practice it every rolling session.
I freaking hate Gi but I started doing it because everyone is saying it helps your game overall. I like our no gi classes better.
Been doing martial arts on and off for my entire life, started with TKD and some other stuff and now starting up BJJ. BJJ is much more cerebral and I love the steep learning curve. If you have a belt in BJJ that means you have that belt. No bullshit.

taxgeek83Participant@apj – Love the BJJ/CPA analogy. I hadn't really thought of it that way before.
I took me a long time to get used to wearing a gi. I hate putting that thing on in the summer – it's like wearing a winter coat when it's 90 degrees out! Not minding it so much now that it's barely above 20. π Regardless, I'm kind of addicted to it now – I told myself that once I hit the one year mark, I'd allow myself to buy another one. Solid pink this time (my current one is white with purple trim). Although as much as I've skipped training due to summer activities and CPA exams, I might wait until I get my first stripe on my belt.
As far as self-defense goes, I like having the gi as it teaches you how you can use collars/pant legs/etc. to defend yourself if necessary. Though I'm really hoping this is just a fun hobby and that I never have to use it in the “real world!”
