Does this bother anyone else? I feel like I need to vent…

I know there is no way to ask this question without coming off like an elitist jerk but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t annoy me. Let me preface this by saying I have a pretty liberal definition of what I consider to be an accountant (anyone in public, private or gov’t that performs assurance, audits, tax, etc.) BUT I do think there is a “line” (e.g.HR block employees or bookkeepers.)

I realize this bookkeeper is proud of their “Associates Degree” (if they even have that) and may work very hard in the “Accounts Payable Dept” or whatever and that’s fine. But when a licensed CPA or a 150 credit hour CPA candidate with public experience are also called accountants and the average layperson mistakenly considers these roles comparable well I feel like it cheapens the latter’s accomplishments.

When someone tells me, “Oh you’re an accountant? My friend XXXX is an accountant too!” I really have to bite my tongue because what I want to say is, “No, your friend XXXX is a bookkeeper who cuts checks and stuffs envelops all day.”

Why is it a lawyer or a nurse has to have a license to be called those things but anyone working in any accounting dept. of any company can run around with impudence calling themselves accountants?!?

So when I overhear said bookkeeper rambling on about being an accountant I’m left with two options. Either:

    1) Be a total douche and cut them down with a statement like, “Oh me too, what state are you licensed in?”; OR

    2) Swallow my pride, let them have their ego boost and stop being such a jerk inside my head.

Let me just say number 2 is very difficult for me sometimes….

Jeff wouldn't have created this website if he hadn't struggled with the exams a bit.

Sandra and Mini are representing, let's say, 1% of all CPA candidates.

Mini likes to talk a big game but he is still a softy and likes to help out those that have failed multiple times (me)

At the end of the day, what matters is your technical knowledge and your interpersonal skills. People without those skills will either not get a job, or will eventually get weeded out of the profession for malpractice, not knowing their sh**, or simply not being able to maintain a good client relationship. It's as simple as that. No reason to lose any sleep over the increasing number of CPAs out there. I strive to be the best at what I do. To stand out from the crowd. There's a lot of competition out there? I say bring it, let the best one win.

What I would agree on is making the exam a bit tougher, but that's another story.

Btw – I've lost about 15 pounds since August. Feels great to substitute all the long studying hours at my office, with pumping iron at the gym.

So … when someone dishes it back instead of just nodding their head (Kristen) … you deem them ‘easily offended'??

Are you kidding? I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I don't come on here to boost my own ego by putting others down. And I'm hardly offended. It takes a lot more than overconfident, boastful children to offend me. Just the fact that you need to ask how I survive in the real world, because I called someone out on a ridiculous comment, tells me you are the one who needs a lesson in survival. Unless of course, jumping on a bandwagon with bullies is your means of survival.

It's funny, I did a tour in the Marine Corps and I have encountered more ignorant, self centered, cocky people on this website than I did in my time in the Corps. And I'll tell you what, those men and women have 100X more of reason to be cocky a$$holes than any of you. The difference is, they don't need to convince themselves or anyone else of it like some of the people on this site.

    Grow up.

I actually do quite well in the real world because in the real world there are consequences to actions.

This is Jeff's site and I respect that but those two mentioned have caused more trouble than anyone else on this site. I merely pointed out that since Jeff was beholden to them then perhaps people should post elsewhere until Jeff realized that letting these schoolyard bullies push people's buttons and start fights wasn't the correct approach to running his website. So then Jeff began deleting my posts.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to find the posts where all the turmoil is created and then figure out who caused the problems. Yet they post and mine are deleted. That's fine.

Dang it's a good thing Bill Gates and Edison didn't take any of this kinda advice or negativity and quit before succeeding! How many times did it take before Bill Gates actually got positive results? I read he had mannnnnny failures along the way. Hmmmm good thing he didn't just give up cuz he failed. And here is a quote from Edison (who failed over 10,000 to make the lightbulb): “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”

And yes, I am one of those who went to college 5 years and ended up with a Masters in Accounting and a 4.0 (all A's in Undergrad and Grad school)…and I have failed this test a lot. Good thing I won't quit cuz I know I am not a moron! I just have to remember little things, like when I got the only 100% on an intermediate accounting test….in THE weed out accounting major class.

Anyway, DON'T listen to negativity anyone, and if this is what you want, DON'T give up!! There really are humble people out there who you can emulate, and you can be successful in life!
