Hello Accounting World. I need a little hope and advice. I’ve been a Bookkeeper for a little under one year. I really dont like the pay. I’ve been thinking about sitting for CPA . I work with a CPA now. She has taught me alot about Bookeeping, reporting, reconciling, etc. Doea my bookkeeping experience count as one year experience to become licensed? If not, what are flexible ways I could gain experience while still employed as bookkeeper? Could I get experience in evenings? Need help and ideas.

There’s specific educational requirements that you need to meet to sit for the CPA exams. I believe it’s 150 college credit hours.

She's asking about licensing – which is a state issue. Each state is different. I would check out your state board website and dig into the experience reqs…it should spell it out. Calling the BOA to clear up any confusing points is a good idea as well.

I don't know what state that you live in but here in New York bookkeeping experience does count towards the experience requirement to be a CPA

Most states specifically exclude bookkeeping. But if you were involved in other things like financial statement preparation and preparing tax forms and things like that you may qualify depending on the state you're in. I'm in Tennessee which is one of the more lax on experience requirements and that's how it is here. Many other states require actual public accounting work. You'll need to call your state board and ask.

Everything should be pretty much spelled out on the experience certificate or the accompanying instructions; I believe the requirements are very broad for CA.
