    Hi all,

What kind of year end bonus do you get at work? I’m the Head of the accounting department at my company and I am wondering what the industry standard is maybe? Been getting about $2,500 max year end it is all part of an “employee pool” that we accrue for, for the entire year.

I want to bring up to the president that given that I am considered management I’d like to be able to get out of this “pool” and maybe have a separate accrual for management. As we grow, the bonus gets larger but more people are added to it so the bonus just remains stagnant. We accrue currently 2.5% of net profit monthly and for the owner 20%. Background info: we are a small company that’s grown a lot since I’ve started. When I started it was 4 people in all the company now we are having a lot of growth and should have about 17 people by the end of the year. Net profit this year should be between 800k-1m.

So my main question is a $10k bonus annually out of the question in the accounting industry? Is it usually $2-5k? Am I asking for too much? Background on me: 29 been at the company since I graduated (23) have my masters and my cpa.

    Anything would help!
    Thanks!

We get 13-17% of our salary, depending on the attainment percentage of the overall corporate goals. So no, a $10k bonus is not out of the question.

However, this is at a public company. It is going to vary from business to business. I'm a senior with a masters and a CPA.

    2016 I got about 5k with a W2 of low 50's.
2017 I got 10k bonus after tax season, with a salary of mid 60's.
After I passed the CPA, 25k raise, and negotiations for equity/partnership. Based on prior discussions I should see at least 10k bonus, if not 15k.
Or…. maybe my boss is just going with the flow for now, and will fire me after tax season?

My bonuses are not the norm (I don't think), as I have been underpaid for a very long time and I am aggressively forcing increases or leaving.
To put the above numbers in perspective, I've been here since I graduated college 15 years ago.

At your level I don't think it's out of the question. When I was an accounting manager back in 2011, I was getting bonuses in the $10k area. However, I worked for a large, public company with net revenues in the $2-2.5B range. That said, I was also being paid under market. At any rate, I don't think your asking for more is unreasonable.

    2012-2014 (Staff Accountant/Financial Analyst at $350M Media Company) $5000, $5500, 6000

    2015-2017 (Senior Accountant at $18B Bio Pharma Company) $7000, $9000, $10000

For what your company pulls in the bonus seems about right.

Thank you all for the responses! This really helps. I was just checking because I know I’m not in a “revenue producing role” so I always thought the larger bonuses were more for just sales people but I do more than just accounting.

Now to work up the courage and bring it up to my boss… lol
Good luck to anyone who isn’t done yet and is still working on passing, it sucks but is all worth it once you’re done!
