Biggest Misconception – BEC

I’ve taken BEC 3x. I don’t really count the first one because I took it immediately after tax season with minimal studying. The other 2 times, I have scored 73 and 72.

My main concern with BEC is the Written Communication aspect. Becker and other study guides make it seem as if it is a guaranteed 15 points when that is simply not the case. I have scored weaker all 3 times in this phase. There is more to it than simple sentence structure and grammar. Becker specifically says that you do not even have to know the subject content to receive credit.

Why is this so misleading? Surely, I can’t be that bad of a writer. I’m getting ready to sit for Round 4 on Friday and feel confident in the material outside of the W/C. Anyone else feel the same way? What is it that I am missing?

BEC was horrible. I did pass, so I don't know how I did on the written portion. But, I've always heard BEC is the easiest. I beg to differ. It covered a ton of material!

I completely agree with that statement, @tferriter! As much as I struggled with AUD, I found the material at least easier since it all related to one thing. This one, though, is just all over the place and I struggle with remembering it all.

I took it last December around this time and the WC was the only thing that came back as stronger, where literally everything else was weaker. So I'm not terribly worried about the WC. I'm a fairly stronger writer, though, since my entire undergrad program was papers with no exams.

From everything I've read around here, the general consensus seems to be that as long as you answer the question and provide some buzzwords in your response, you should be good. Even if the buzzwords don't necessarily apply to the topic at hand. Not sure how accurate that is, but that's all the advice I can offer. From what I remember, I did roughly 3 paragraphs for each of the WC last year. I know one of them I didn't provide a ton of information since I wasn't completely knowledgeable on the topic. I just did the best I could, provided a couple of paragraphs, and hoped for the best.
