Big 4 Internship

I accepted an internship offer for next Summer at a Big 4. On the contract it only states “maintain academic standing.” Would my internship offer get rescinded if I drop an Accounting class and get a W for this semester? I will retake it next semester.

    Thank you!

No. They just wont hire you after the internship – maybe they'll put the offer but they'd likely let you show up since they were preparing for it already. Exceptions being a family or personal event causing it. Or you literally walk on water during the internship. When you go back into recruitment everyone will wonder what was wrong since everyone gets offers after their internships. They'll think you did nothing or pee'd on a partner's desk.

Quite frankly, you'll be worse off had you not gotten the offer to start with. Sorry..

I heard just a week ago about a person getting sent home. Wasn't an intern even – he had graduated and was starting full time. Believe he interned as well. He flew into town and was in his full time training class – they pulled him aside and handed him his ticket home…

Regarding your decision to drop. That should be based on how high you can get your grades considering you work your hardest – and if that grade would look better than a “W”

Some of us took 19 credit hours in semesters, such as myself…if you are in that boat they'd probably be more forgiving on a drop. But you also had to drop one of your accounting classes.

Get the course grade up. Or compensate with higher grades so you can speak to that if questioned.

I'm doing you a favor and making you serious – I had the same issue my senior year. Luckily, my grades didn't fall.

@cjsoccer3, oh my god. Where did you even get all those ideas from? You couldn't be more off mark.

To jqass: send an email to your HR, explain your priorities have changed or whatever he reason for you dropping the class is. Ask if it's going to affect your offer at all. But I can tell you right now what that clause means: you need to maintain a GPA above the minimum GPA that your Big4 accepts from your school (usually not lower than 3.3 or so). So, if your GPA drops from 3.5 to 2.8, you're in trouble and the offer might be easily revoked. Otherwise, you're good.

No one is going to put you through an internship and not hire you if you did well. Who in their right mind will waste a ton of resources on someone they're not interested in hiring? Never seen one person invited for an internship if they weren't a strong candidate for employment. Unless you screw up during those intern months you'll get an offer.

@Son, Thank you. I've asked several people they said don't ask don't tell because it won't affect my graduation date/CPA eligibility. Assuming that I still keep my GPA by the time I intern up above a 3.2, my offer won't get affected. Is this true?

a W is no big deal, just retake the class and do well it in next semester. much better than getting a B- and not being able to retake it

    FAR 75
    AUD 64,64, 86!

You'll be fine! Nobody cares, just do a great job. And besides, you should keep your options open just like they will.

    BEC: 85
    REG: 74, 78
    AUD: 86
    FAR: October?

Yeah, if it won't affect literally anything I'd just not mention it unless asked. I have decided to audit one of my classes mid-semester, and it's listed as an “AUD” in my transcript. No one ever asked about it. As far as GPA goes, internship postings at my university's career website specifically indicated the minimum GPA to apply, which is likely the same as what you need to keep your offer. You can also check with your campus recruiter directly. The whole reason why they put the clause there is because there's always that one idiot who assumes they've got this whole big4 thing in their pocket and will start making millions any day now. So they stop studying and their GPA goes down the drain. Just don't be that person and remember that all the hard work is just starting.
