Big 4 and owning a business

I’m thinking of starting my own accounting business while currently working for a Big 4. I was hoping someone else has had a similar experience or has known of anyone who did this. Is there any independence or ethical rules that Big 4 rules that that they don’t allow employees to have their own business. I’m not planning to use any company time whatsoever. I would be finding my own clients and maybe some subcontract work for other local firms. Time and long hours a side, can I do this? I just passed the exam so I won’t be doing tax until I’m licensed but I’d like to advertise bookkeeper and payroll work for now. So will Big 4 allow this? Thanks for the input.

Only your firm could give you the 100% correct answer to this question. Go through the policy manual and I'm sure there will be something involving this.

    MD Candidate: 10/1/14

    FAR - 87 (11/23/14)
    REG - 87 (1/30/15)
    BEC - 89 (4/19/15)
    AUD - 98 (5/30/15)

    Ethics - 100

    Experience - In Progress!

I know at least one Big 4 does not allow their employees to have side jobs, especially if that side job is doing accounting work on the side.

You should look into it with your firm specifically. It's a terminate-able offense at the firm I can speak for.

Also, you don't need a CPA for tax prep.

Thanks for replying. Yeah I think I'm going to have to look deeper into it.
