At what point in the process can I call myself a CPA?

May be a dumb/silly question and also may be a bit premature since I’m waiting on REG score and still have FAR to retake in October, but just taking a break from studying and daydreaming about being a CPA…

But lets say I pass both tests and receive my last “passing” score in November. Can I start using the title Xxxx Xxxx, CPA on resume’s, emails, Linked-in, etc. when I receive my “passing” score in November? Or are you supposed to wait until you apply and receive your license?

My assumption is you are supposed to wait until you receive your license… but just wanted to hear and confirm the correct answer from people who already have their license and/or have more knowledge about the process.

I believe it is when you actually receive your licence. If you advertise yourself as a CPA and they go look you up under the state licencing and you are not listed it will automatically disqualify you from moving on in the application process because they will think you are not telling the truth. Just put you have passed the exam and are in the process of obtaining your licence… safe bet.

The only time you may call yourself a CPA is when you receive your license and not a moment before!

You should also be specific as to what state you're licensed in whenever possible.

You can potentially call yourself a CPA Candidate. I use that on my resume and list the sections I passed so employers can see it's in process. But some states have a stricter rule on having that CPA Candidate title, I would say check with your state.

I was at a family party once and asked if I was a CPA yet…at that point I couldn't possibly have been closer to being a CPA:

    Exams: Done

    Experience: Submitted

    Application: Approved

    License Fee: Mailed

But no license issued yet, so, the answer (with the above explanation) was No lol
