    Hi Everyone,

It might be a silly question to ask, but I am not a tax person myself. I would like to ask for advice on the preparing my own tax return this year. Since I am paying my CPA study expenses on my own, is it possible to deduct those expenses somewhere on the Form 1040 for professional development or continuing education expenses? Any advice appreciated.

    A broke CPA Candidate.

The only you're getting me to buy into all of your scams is if we make Pinot Grigio tax deductible. Then I will go to bat for massages, facials and even business suits.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Why limit it to one specific grape? All wine should be a tax deduction… it is a medical expense after all, right? 😛

If you take a CPA review course through a university (which CA accepts as credit towards exam/licensing btw), you can deduct it as tuition and books. This difference in treatment baffles me, especially considering I paid full price for Becker to get the payment plan.

    FAR - 71, 77
    AUD - 75
    REG - 80
    BUS - 72, 77

I've been wondering about this as well – I work in governmental internal auditing where a CPA license is NOT required. The agency wants us to have a professional certification, however, most of the auditors have a CDFM or a CIA. If I stay with the agency, then I don't believe that I'm dealing with the “minimum job requirement” parameter, so I think that my Becker material should be deductible. However, if I leave the agency to get a job as a CPA, that is not deductible.

Not sure how brave I'm going to be on my taxes this year… right now I'm too engulfed in studying for FAR to even think about filing.

    REG - Nov 4, 2013: 88
    FAR - Feb 27, 2014: 86
    AUD - April 5, 2014: 91
    BEC - May 6, 2014: 83

    Florida CPA 24 July 2014
(Done in seven months - thank you Jesus!!)

@quin I thought the same thing because CPA is not a minimum level requirement for my position either but somewhere in the IRC there is an exception that CPA fees and BAR exam fees are not deductible.

    FAR- PASSED (11/13)
    REG- PASSED (2/14)
    BEC- PASSED (5/14)
    AUD- PASSED (8/14)

If it's important to you, you will find a way. If it isn't, you will find an excuse.
