Hey guys,
so next week could potentially be my last time going on NASBA LOL. Fingers crossed. But I’m planning on getting another certification that may add value to my career in the future. I have been interested in individual taxation/ tax planning, hence I think the CFP is most beneficial but CFA may also be helpful if I do wanna move up in the corporate world (i.e CFO) in future. Anyone has ever taken these or know anyone that did?

Think long and hard before attempting the CFA. 3 exams that can only be taken 1-2 times a year and a 4 year experience barrier. None are a walk in the park either. Buying additional studying material is optional for the CFA because the CFA institute will give you everything you need.

Ask yourself this, do you really want to study another 2+ years?

considering it but i have heard CFA is all four parts of CPA in one on level one….

This is just me but if I knew I was going to end up taking the CFA, I would not have taken the CPA. Therefore, I'm just going to pass this exam and be content 🙂

Ive been told that CFA makes CPA seem like a walk in the park. Just compare the average study hours and you might change your mind.

Thanks for all the response. I have heard CFA is much harder than CPA haha and knowing how much I had to study to even pass one section makes me worried.. I guess the ultimate question is would it be beneficial for me as a tax person. I like the area and don't think Ill switch to corporate which is more finance and accounting based.. but things may change (little too early to say).

I agree with Anthony about putting a lot of thought into it. I'm in the middle of both the CPA and the CFA and in my experience, they're not even comparable. The recommended study commitment for CFA level 1 is over 300 hours alone. There is a 4 year experience requirement, however, qualifying candidates can sit for level 1 in their final year of university. The CFA is totally manageable, but not without sacrifice. I stayed in studying almost every weekend of my senior year of college to pass level 1.

Wow ^ Debit That is impressive. That would be like hell for me but I agree sacrifices is what matter. You're def gonna go FAR in life. Now, for the 4 year experiences would tax qualify me to even sit? I don't think Id like to switch to corporate anytime soon.

So the requirements for sitting and becoming a CFA charterholder are different. To sit for Level I, you just need a Bachelor's degree or be in your final year of undergraduate study. If that doesn't apply, you need 4 years of professional experience (not necessarily investment) or a combination of work/education experience that totals 4 years.

Applying for the charter is after you've passed the exams and collected the appropriate work experience.
