    Hi All,

Passed the CPA in December, finally got licensed with the state at the end of January. Should I also apply for AICPA membership and pay the dues? Is it worth it? Are the perks well worth it?

    Thanks,

I just had to pay for an AICPA membership myself. The firm I work for requires it, although they reimburse you for the cost.

I am not a member yet, but with the membership you get the Journal of Accountancy each month and you get discounts for CPE. I was told that the FICPA has more networking opportunities than the AICPA, but I cannot verify that at this time.

I've heard from coworkers that the AICPA life insurance rates are very cheap compared to what you can buy on your own.

Right now I am getting Life Ins. through AICPA as a CPA candidate… but that will be expiring soon. I guess it all depends on if you want a $400 a month subscription to Journal of Accountancy then lol.

It costs $400 a month to be a member of the AICPA?! Wow!!! Find a job that will pay for your membership and the CPE. Geesh.

OK. Haha. You had me very skeptical so here is the dues page. That is a yearly basis and is for officers in industry and partners/owners in public accounting. It is $235/year for most regular folks + $65 enrollment fee for newbies. Just in case anybody else was wondering..

Everyone I have talked to said they only joined the AICPA or MNCPA if their employer was paying for it.

I'm sure some are skeptical, but one of the main reasons I joined the AICPA was to take advantage of their insurance programs. Check them out for yourself at http://www.cpai.com.

Thanks, Mamabear for clarifying the dues for me. I thought $400 was a little much. I can probably handle $235.

It would be nice to be a member, but not for $235/year. Any other accounting organizations out there that would be good for my career? I'd be interested in an organization that meets and has outings related to business. It would be fun to learn more about business and network at the same time.

What about your local state CPA society? Ours meets regularly, has networking functions, and lots of CPAs take our required CPE at their offices as well.

I'll look into the state thing. Good idea.

My employer only re-imburse for one membership, either state or AICPA itself. I chose to go with the state because that's where I'm licensed and its probably where most networking opportunity comes from. In Massachusetts, some of their CPEs are free if you're a member. There are other stuff like having the privilege to be a committee member in one of their various committees.

I don't think their life Insurance is good enough, its a good supplement but definitely not something to rely on as a stand alone insurance.
