Not too long ago I got fired from an accounting job I really liked. It seemed I did not possess the skills for that job. Ever since all my interviews have been in similar jobs. Don’t know what it is about accounting where most jobs I come across will be in small companies who have little to offer in terms of training. I’ve essentially given up on being hired by a large corporation, where I think I would be a better fit.

Is there some sort of online accounting boot camp I can use to improve my skills?

For instance, I would like to get better at finding out “how do I know this is right?” on more subjective matters. How to check that I didnt miss anything. etc.

Honestly, I graduated from a top 10 undergrad program and top 20 grad program and yet I feel so unprepared for the real world. To the point where I wonder if I even have an accountants brain.

I think this is highly dependent on your local market and circumstances, but I started my career as a temp data entry clerk via Robert Half's Office Team. At the time, their Accountemps brand was too prestigious for me. I think it was a valuable way to develop the references and experience needed to get a real job. As distasteful as I have found their full-time recruiting arm, the temp organization provided me a critical on-ramp to a career in business.

Why not take courses at a local community college to brush up on some skills or even develop new ones? Santa Clara University near me has a program which earns you the Certificate of Advanced Accounting Proficiency, which also lets you sit for the CPA exam. I think in the summer it's something like a 10 week intense course, and during the school year it meets only on the weekend over the course of a semester or something.

Need more info on what you're struggling with…As long as the balance sheet balances, ending cash on the cash flow = cash on the balance sheet, everything else is subjective and company specific.
