Today I just heard this radio spot for H&R Block where they question going to your CPA to get your taxes done. Ok, granted, most CPA’s do not specialize in completing tax returns. No harm with that statement. However, it goes on to talk about if you get to sit there while they do it, who is REALLY completing your return, and (this one really set me off) “will they stand up and defend your return in the event of an audit” (something like that). I almost wrecked my car I was so angry. So, maybe the actual CPA won’t be the one doing your return. It probably goes to one of the other accountants, or tax return specialists, in the office. Granted. BUT, the CPA does review and sign off on it. Especially if they are especially difficult. And, yes, you can and do schedule sit-down time at the CPA firm to go over your information in order to compile the return. Finally, yes your CPA will stand up for you and your return in the event of an audit.

How can they get away with saying this stuff? Ugh..so mad.

Ok, back to studying my favorite FAR.

CPAbefore40 – Sad to say that these families could have a few more bills in their pocket if only they had more patience in receiving their refund and understood the product.

@skynet – I worked at Liberty for a season and it was awful. I would get a huge commission if they selected instant rebate but cringed every time. The good news was that I wasn't being forced to sell it by my boss. My bonus check was based on that kind of crap.

On another note – my father in law goes to HR Block and just referred my grandma in law. They know that I know taxes but I am very stressed but price check with a CPA or EA for goodness sake!! I know they are getting ripped. The sad thing is that this agent at HR Block found things wrong with her prior year returns and I confirmed them…..who knows where she went before…..

golfball7773 – I would say that if you can help them prepare their returns for them personally, do it. For them being Senior Citizens, their returns will not be complicated and could be done over inexpensive off the self software. It could save them a lot of money and not have them get RIPPED off by these places especially if they are living on a budget. The extra savings could help them tremendously.

@Skynet I did buy TaxAct so I can do multiple returns for a good price. They have to sign their own return though. However, I feel uncomfortable asking and so do they. Maybe I could offer to double check prior year returns?

golfball7773 – If they can save a few hundred, I doubt they will have a problem signing. Plus, with Taxact, all they do is choose a PIN number for signing when they e-file.

@Skynet – that is what my friends do. Hence I buy enough for 5 returns and the pay me generously via cash, booze, food, etc 😉 kidding – just cash and booze. If it is cash – it is to cover their portion of the software cost then I get a nice wine/whiskey

golfball7773 – Believe me, Taxact is really inexpensive. I have used it for many years for my own returns because i know exactly what I'm doing and easily fly through the software. A few bottles will easily cover the cost : )

golfball7773 – OK I see, he's an Engineer. Just remember that you can help him with his taxes, but can't help him with getting women as you are not a Magician. LOL!

I was doing a return last weekend at Hewitt and the fees came back way too high, called the main office for an override and was told it adds $100 to fees for entering the 1095-C information. Was mortified I'd never been told that before, decided I have more than enough confidence in my ability to prepare simple returns, and called back after my client left to say I was DONE.
