3 Parts in, no JOB!

    Hey everyone,
A little background of myself, I currently work as a cashier at walmart and do taxes at hrblock. I have been taking and passing the exams since December 2015. I’m done with BEC, REG and AUD but I can’t get an accounting job to get the experience requirement to get cpa license.
My main concern is what sort of background do accounting firms look for?

Being fresh out of college seems to equate to free jobs in my experience, especially if you're young. That said, sounds like you've been graduated for at least a little bit now since you're taking exams, so once you have your CPA license that's a huge bonus.

I had zero accounting experience going into my current position, I think working at HR block is an immense boost to your resume. Honestly, if you are 25 or younger, based off of what you've said you have everything you need and then some to get a job at any accounting firm you want. All you need to worry about is nailing the interview, which as long as you're confident should be an absolute breeze. If you are mid to late 20s, 30s, or 40s, that can be a detriment, but it can also work to your advantage. If you are passionate when talking about your life and past experiences, you will absolutely get hired. Your social skills will be what gets you to the next step.

Tl; dr you can do it OP. Don't mess up the handshake, smile (but not too much as to avoid giving off serial killer vibes), and walk in with an honest but confident resume and attitude.

Do you attend career fairs at your school? Participate in networking events? Accounting clubs and organizations? They all provide opportunities and tips on getting a job.

    Hey guys,
thanks for the advice. I really didnt think about the age factor until now. I'm early 30's. I also regularly attend career fairs at school, especially the annual accounting networking fair. Last year I went to accounting night and alot of people told me that “this is the firm for you!” But past that I either don't hear back from them or they tell me they are going with someone with more experience.

I was also an active member in Beat Alpha Psi.
    I guess I really don't understand why I can't find a job.

Where do you live at? If you live in the middle of no where it's going to be rough. What about your resume? If it's terrible, get it reviewed at your career center. Right now isn't the best time to search because most firms don't hire until fall. I would say try temp agency or something similar and search your local small firms websites.

What Anthony said is 100% true. Also, put more detail about what you did at Beta Alpha Psi. Recruiters love that stuff. I was never the type to overachieve much (3.4 GPA or so, hated most extracurricular activities, no community service experience) but being in Beta Alpha Psi made up for all of that.

You might already be doing this, but following up is *Donald Trump voice* HUGE. Emailing a recruiter the day after you get their contact info/finish an interview helps immensely. Think about how many candidates' resumes they see, and give them a way to remember yours. I had a classmate who sent her resume in a mini-fedEx mailing envelope, then inside the envelope was her resume, styled as if it was a form 1040 income tax return. You don't have to be that creative, but you'd be surprised how far gestures like that go.

How many resumes have you sent out and how many interviews have you had?

Be sure to put on your resume, if you haven't already, that you've passed 3 parts of the CPA exam. That should get you quite a ways. The job market is hard nowadays. The older generations can't afford to retire and are working longer. Or, they're continuing to work because they don't want to give up the cash flow that their lifestyle requires. To quote one of my accounting instructors, “You guys should pray for the death of those older workers because they're preventing you from getting jobs.”

@CurtRod, you have to be patient, pro-active, stay positive, and learn how to market yourself. Getting jobs is all about self-promotion. Of course, it is always good to have something to be proud of in your life. I think mingling two jobs while killing CPA exams should be a great source of pride.

Btw, which city do you live in?

Definitely put on your resume that you've passed 3 sections. I got a huge boost from that. I also added that to my linkedin above education so it was in their face. I had a hard-time getting a job b/c I wasn't a 4.0 Accounting student & didn't have extracurr. activities. I worked full-time in non-accounting industry but that seemed to be irrelevant. So, finally I revamped my resume & put my non-accounting experience into accounting terms. I was an IT consultant so I added the whole “client experience” angle since I wanted to do Audits which is heavy on client interaction.

Definitely don't lose hope. With three sections knocked out and having experience dealing with taxes, I would think that some accounting firm would be interested in hiring you.

at this point your focus needs to be on far.

Unforunately we have a time limit to deal with so go ahead and get your last exam passed.

You can look and send out your resume and applications, but make sure that you are getting your preparation in so you can be done with the exams.
