Hello i want to prepare 2016 tax returns and I need to obtain a PTIN. Does anyone know if I need to pay for the 2016 PTIN with SS or 2017 PTIN with SS. Kind of confusing on the IRS website. Thanks in advance.

You need a 2017 PTIN for any returns you prepare in 2017.

You'd need a 2016 if you were actually preparing returns between now and Saturday.
