150 hour became effective after approved to sit prior to finishing exams

    Hey Gang,

    I am hoping someone out here can steer me in the right direction. I applied in CA to sit for my CPA exam in mid 2013. I was approved to sit with about 130ish credit hours (120 was the CA rule at the time) and I’ll be done in about 3 weeks. I started reading up on what is next and noticed that during the time I met the qualifications to sit and now the rule switched to 150. How does this impact me? My education was already approved prior to being able to sit for the exam but the handbook is referring to people who passed the exams before 12/31/13, not those who were approved to take them. Just wondering if anyone has any direct experience or insight.

    I am not in CA but I remember when this rule was put into effect and I believe you had to pass the exams by a certain date. Your best bet may be to call the board and confirm. I think I remember someone else posting about this issue a few weeks back and they were looking for another state to get licensed in.

    I'm in California and am approved to sit. My understanding is that one only needs 24 credits of Accounting, and 24 credits of Business to sit for the exam. However, I think everyone applying for licensure from 2014 on-wards needs 150 units, and all of that other jazz.

    I was qualified to sit for the exam in 2005 and just finally passed at the beginning of 2015. I was 16 units short which meant I would not be licensed until I had the units. I started studying in July 2013 and hoped to pass all parts then, but that didn't work out…

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
    BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
    I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

    @JohnWayneIsGod is right. When they approve you to sit for the exam, it's simply to make sure you have the required 24 business units and 24 accounting units (for CA). When you apply for licensure (after completing the exams and experience), you need to have the required number of units. This would have been 120 units for anyone applying to licensure by 12/31/13. Unfortunately you're going to need 150 units when you apply for licensure.

    Sounds like I'm going back to school. I just checked my transcripts and I have 140 units.

    Any suggestions on the fastest way to 10 accredited units? I'm thinking online accelerated but it has been a long time since I have attempted to take any formal classes.I have a local community college that offers online accelerated but maybe someone knows a 7 -10 week offering that is easier on the wallet.

    I'm in Cali too… I took 8 online classes before I was allowed to sit; I lacked a whole year of credits. Online community college is cheap and mostly easy.
