Thoughts on pre-test SIMS and MCQ's

I’m sitting here looking at a list of my SIMS and wondering which one will be the pretest. Could it be the one referencing a court case I never heard of (by name) in any of my review books? Could it be the huge multilevel, two-tab simulation? A different SIM all together?

I’ve come to the conclusion that my passing or failing depends on which of these SIMS get thrown out as the pre-test. If it is a SIM that I answered correctly and did well on, I could be hosed. If it is the big two-tabber, I could benefit.

My thinking with the pre-test questions (MCQ’s and SIMS) is that if you get them right, you should get those points. Only throw them out if they hurt the candidate.

    Thoughts?

I completely agree – I know mine is going to completely depend on which sim was a pre-test. It stinks that you can spend a bunch of time on a problem that is pre-test, get 0 points for it, and waste precious time for a graded sim. Ugh! This is my first exam and this wait is literally driving me insane!!!! 🙂

    REG: 81 (5/25/12)
    FAR: 82 (7/20/12)
    AUD: August 31
    BEC: October ??

It's going to make zero difference in the end….

The AICPA has decided that the pass rate is going to stay below 50% which means they will statistically engineer the questions to follow suit. So, for example, if they adopted the CPApending plan of, “pre-test questions (MCQ’s and SIMS) that you get right, you get those points.” then all they will do is make the non-pretest questions harder to compensate so it will work out the same.

    AICPA Exam formula:

Difficulty of Questions X Testing Method = <50% Pass Rate

If one becomes easier the other must become more difficult!

My theory is that the crazy, matrix SIMS are pretest. I remember on REG and FAR (1st and 2nd time for FAR), there was a SIM that had this crazy and odd matrix and I had a hard time understanding what they were asking. It wasn't that I didn't know how to do it; I was unsure of what they were asking me. It was weird. The other SIMS came from the material and were not surprises in the sense that if I knew the stuff in Becker, I would have passed.

    REG - 80 (Becker only)
    BEC - 76 (Becker only)
    AUD - 71, 76 (Becker only)
FAR - 65, 74, 81! (Becker, Wiley Test Bank, Ninja notes & Audio)

    CPA Class of 2012 🙂
