After much thought….I’ve decided that I’m not cut out for the CPA Exam. There’s nothing more frustrating than to sit for hours studying REG material, then take a study test and miss the questions. Thank you to those that have responded to questions over the last couple of months. Best regards to all~

None of us are cut out for this $hit! Don't give up! I have sat for the exam a few times and have yet to pass but it's everyone on here that keeps me going. Don't give this up just yet! They make it hard for a reason!

    AUD 81 (X4) Previous scores 59, 72, 72
    REG 80 (X3) Previous scores 59, 60
    FAR 75 (X2) Previous score 67
    BEC 79 (X2) Previous score 58

Yeah, I know completely how you feel. Is this your first test? If it is, you might try sticking with it and seeing how you feel about FAR, AUD, and BEC. The only reason I am still in this game is because the other three sections were nowhere near as horrible (for me) as REG currently is. I had to study a lot for them, but I never felt like I was wasting my time studying no matter what I did (like now, with REG). If you can pass the other three, that might give you the motivation to grin and bear REG.

Ok, break over. Back to creating notes and failing practice exams.

    Wisconsin Candidate. NTS 450
    BEC - 82 AUD - 85
    FAR - 83 REG - 71, 86

Just take a look at my tag line. I've been at this since Nov 08. I'm taking what I hope will be my last two exams this window but won't know until near end of June if I passed. If not I lose my AUD credit and have to pretty much start over. I won't quit but I do plan on taking a break in June and going on vacation for the first time in a long time. I also plan on getting my CFE certification in Aug and picking back up where I left off if I failed either BEC or FAR. Hang in there.

    @dhuffman,

I got the CFE certification as a warm up for the CPA. It requires about 1% of the effort that the CPA exam does, so it should be a nice break for you.

    BEC - 83 (10/22/10)
    REG - 87 (11/30/10)
    AUD - 76 (02/26/11)
    FAR - 79 (04/26/11)

@wantmylifeback, Since my job is strictly governmental (with some tax stuff thrown in) auditing I figure the CFE will be very useful. I'm considering the CGFM too maybe. I really love auditing and find the fraud and forensic stuff to be fascinating. What do you do?

Seems like we have a lot in common! I'm govt auditing, too, and absolutely love the fraud aspect of my job. I found the CFE material to be a lot of common sense stuff, and definitely not very technical at all. You have to devote some time to it, but if you do, you'll blow through it with no problem.

I think whenever I get the CPA completed that I'm taking a long break!

    BEC - 83 (10/22/10)
    REG - 87 (11/30/10)
    AUD - 76 (02/26/11)
    FAR - 79 (04/26/11)

Hey please don't give up just because it seems difficult. There might have been a reason why you wanted to do it. Explore it and you may find some strength from it (just like Jeff says about writing down 3 reasons why you want to become a CPA).

If you don't mind I have a few suggestions. If you are in this line, start with your strengths or what seems easy to you. If you thing REG is your strength, then go with it. But it is also the toughest exam. So after you pass it, this is the first exam that is close to the expiration (if it takes time to complete within the 18 month timeline). .

Study questions are meant to help us learn the material. I don't think we have to get them right first time. I do them like this. I look at the question and try to guess the answer. If I don't know or am not sure, I look back at the material to relearn the material. The subject matter is vast and it takes time to grasp it.

You may also try coaching classes. Another option is taking courses at the local community college.

I think anyone can learn it if you really want to get the qualification. The trick is to find out smart ways that works for one.

Hope this helps. If not anything, your post has made me more motivated about my desire to work at it, no matter what. So thanks for that.

People are on this forum because they struggle with this test. Please do yourself a favor and read Jeff's story. Take a few days off and get back to your drawing board. Good luck!

I will just say…look at my signature…I've been doing this for a long time…and I won't give up until I have those three letters. They mean more to me now then they did when I started this journey. If you need to take time to just breathe and get your mind in the game a little better than do that…BUT don't give up!!!

    REG-80, 77, 77
    BEC-67, 68, 71, 67, 71, 74, 71, 74, 72, 77
FAR- 72, 65,67, 53, 75 (truth be known the 53 was with 4 hours of studying)
    AUD-58, 62, 72, 74, 74, 75
took 5 years but I'm DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing I learned the most in my CPA exam journey was perseverance. Remember, “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial.” The trainer/owner of my gym is always reminding me that our bodies can go much further than we think and that we underestimate our abilities. The discouragement you are feeling about the exam is totally normal. In fact, if you weren't having discouraging days then you would be an ‘abnormal' CPA candidate. You are cut out for the exam and if you really want it, keep at it and don't give up…persevere!
