Taking regulation with tax experience

    Hello everyone,

I am currently in the process of studying for regulation. For the most part all the tax stuff is fairly straight forward to me due to the fact that I have almost 7 years of tax experience. I have to admit that I have been taking this section of the exam very lightly due to my tax background. This weekend I spent a whooping 2 hours of studying. I am using Becker’s study material and I was able to power through all the material rather quickly. The only parts I feel weak in are the ethics and professional responsibilities, federal tax procedures and legislative process, and a few business law topics. My question to any other seasoned tax preparers out there who have taken the exam is how did you prepare for this portion? Should I not be taking this exam lightly? Because the last thing I want to do is not pass this section. I am currently scheduled to take the exam October 9th, but I am debating whether to move it up to October 5th. Thanks for the feedback.

I work in tax but have only two years under my belt. I feel like it has helped prepare me but I am still taking it very serious. How are you doing on the MC questions? If you are getting perfect on all of them then I would imagine you would be fine for the real exam. The business law portion to me most of it I have not seem since blaw junior year and that is 40% of the exam so make sure you understand that as well. I guess it is up to you to move your exam up or not.

    AUD - 08/20/12 - 82
    REG - 10/30/12 - 82
    FAR - 01/05/13 - 80
    BEC - 04/15/13 - 84

I am a bit jealous about you having all that wonderful experience. You sound like you're confident about your knowledge. However, those five days can be a big help for final prepping. Have you done enough simulations and MCQs to be sure about your grasp of the concepts and your timing?

I have scored basically 85% and up on all the tax homework questions. I did screw up on some of the tax MCQs questions, which consisted of areas I don't work in on a reoccurring basis. In regards to business law questions I have been scoring anywhere from 70% and up on those MCQs. I don't feel nearly as confident with the business law stuff, but I thought I read that it only consists of 20% of the total exam. My approach for this exam has been much different then my other exams and I hope that it doesn't bite me in the butt.

85% on the tax sections is awesome. Study the portions you are fuzzy on. Murphy's Law requires that the stuff you're shaky on will be what the SIMS will be on.

You might want to try to pull up that 70% on the BLAW to a 75% and practice SIMS.

    You're doing great!

My problem is that I haven't felt any urgency to study for this exam and I have not prepared with the same focus I used for my first two exams. I wouldn't say I am a tax expert by any means especially since I rely a lot on the tax software to calculate/prepare items discussed in Becker. I guess I will just spend the next 2 weeks hitting the business law topics.

@FLCPA77– I was making in the mid 80s+ on tax topics when I made a 91 on the actual test. Like you, I was stronger in tax and found the b-law, ethics, professional responsibility, etc. more difficult. I am such a broken record about this, but I *loved* the ninja notes for the non-tax part of REG. Business law and those other topics are so wordy and Jeff really helped boil down the concepts. In the last week before the test, I did tons of those 10-15 problem chapter review tests to make sure I kept the tax stuff fresh while I was reviewing b-law stuff as well.

I don't think it matters that you rely on software in your job if you can still do the calculations for the becker problems and get scores in the high 80s. Sometimes real world experience does really help, and I don't think that you should freak out just because the SEVEN YEARS of experience you have are helping you get ready to blow this test out of the water.

    REG- 53, 91
    BEC- 88
    FAR- 62, 85
    AUD- 85

    Ethics- 93
