I thought I would create this new topic for those that are taking REG in the October/November testing window. I am taking this test on October 19. Anybody have any experience with this section?

I just got my reg score report today for the Jul/Aug window. I passed with an 81. I came out of the exam very unsure whether i passed or not.

What was really interesting is that i score a 53 on Entity Taxation which had a 22-28% CSO. the other passing candidates scored a 79 in this section. also, i was considered weaker in Simulations. I was stronger in everything else, and my written was comparable.

This exam is a crapshoot, because I felt like i knew corp tax pretty well, yet my results indicated that i'm a complete failure in that area. Go Figure. Just glad i passed. I have the feeling that if i had been even "comparable" in MCQ in one of the other CSO areas, that i would've been below passing.

That's crazy TD. In your state do they actually give you a diagnostic on your score? In Illinois they don't…

    glogo2384,

I'm in California, and yes we get a full diagnostic, score report that shows how we did in relation to passing candidates who scored between 75 and 80 on the exam. My point is to (a) provide proof of how unpredictable this exam is because entity tax is definitely not my weakest point, yet I failed that portion, and (b) to proove that even if you fail one of the larger CSO's, there is still hope of passing the overall exam if you do well in other areas. Just shows that you can have a weak area, but you gotta be well covered and know just about everything, but not every last detail. Study your butt off for REG…i've taken all 4 exams now, and feel that it is the most difficult (unless you are in the tax field, which i am not)

Thanks for the insight TD. I appreciate it. Tax has always been a challenge for me, I'm praying for a 75. Congrats on being done!

Jeff, I'm thinking off buying the Yaeger CPA Review as you suggested. Can you give me a little more insight on how it works? I am using Becker now and I don't feel like I'm catching on the same way I did for Audit. How many hours do I devote/budget for the Cram? My exam is on 11/4. Thanks.

well, i'm done studying for now. I've got to wait another month for my Audit results. If i passed, then i'm done,,,but if not, then back to the grind of MCQ's.

glogo2384 – If you don't feel like you're getting a solid foundation, then you should get the HomeStudy and not the cram.

Basically, you watch the videos and take solid notes. Then, you work all of the assigned MCQs (you'll d a ton of MCQs on the video with the instructor too (HomeStudy only)) – and then you work the MCQs on the Wiley software. Take notes as you work the MCQs as well.

Then, take your notes and re-write them.

After that – watch the cram if you order it as well…review your notes…take the exam.

    That's how I did it…it works.

hey jeff & glogo.. I didn't think that estates/trusts was as important but it definitely was on the exam I just took yesterday! Luckily.. I had literally JUST looked at that on my flashcard before I went in, so I think I did okay. Basically just be familiar with the basic forumlas, income, deductions.. etc.

I just took it yesterday.. and the simulations were definitely hard. There were probably only 5 or 6 MCQs that I was unsure of. They were pretty basic, easy questions. & the communications were really easy! My first simulation was okay, kinda hard but wasn't excruciating. Then.. the second sim! Its like they took every topic I was unsure of and threw it on there. Haha, but I did my best.. guessed a lot but overall I'd be surprised if I failed.

& Jeff.. every tab was unrelated, does that sound like a new simulation?

OK – if someone can give me some advice…

I am using Becker to study for REG right now. I did all the becker MC questions and did fine. Then I did the questions in the Wiley book and did horrible. There were lots of questions on topics not even covered in Becker! Does Becker just highlight the important stuff or do I need to go back and learn all the weird exceptions in the Wiley book???

D3Deuel, I have the same question. This is my third exam and a far greater proportion of the Wiley book questions seem to be more on exceptions rather than on main points. I'll be curious as to what others respond.

I used Becker & I just took the exam Friday. There were really only a couple of MCQs that thew me off. Most of the questions were basically just like the ones in the Becker software.. same type of calculations. I obviously don't know if I passed yet, but I felt really comfortable leaving the exam. The simulations were weird though.. so we'll see.
