Studying for REG, will I need to know the "nitty-gritty" details?

    1)

For those of you who have tested for REG, and without divulging any information which would get you in trouble with the good folks at NASBA/AICPA, how detailed should my studying for REG be?

To me, an extreme amount of detail would be having to know exact amounts of maximum exclusions, deductions, etc. a tax payer is eligible for, along with any associated phase-out ranges, and things of that sort.

take, for instance, the “employer-paid qualified adoption expenses” exclusion from income. the max amount to be excluded from income is $12,560, phased out from AGI of $189,710 – $229,710. will i need to know rules to this level of detail to pass REG?

    2)

Also, in your experience, how detailed are the tax questions asked in REG (on the “medium difficulty” testlets)?

It's all fair game to be tested on, so yes.

Some people will tell you no, because they didn't see those details on their test, but others will tell you yes and they saw it on there test. Better not leave it to luck.

I would say know what has a phaseout, but not the phaseout amount. I would memorize the deduction amounts though.
