On my third attempt now. First attempt, I ran out of time and didn’t memorize/understand the concepts well enough. 2nd attempt, did NO MCQs, and just boned up on overall concepts. I did “stronger” on the Sims, “weaker” on MCQs, which is no surprise since I didn’t do any MCQs in preparation for the 2nd one.

I think my strategy for the 3rd one will be to brush up on my weaker subjects. For instance, I dont think I knew enough on Corporate Tax and do a TON of MCQs.

How many hours do you think I need to allocate for this test? I’m thinking I would like to schedule in 1st week of October, which gives me two weeks. I’m guessing maybe 50 more hours??? Or put another way, how many more hours do I need to put in to get FOUR FREAKING POINTS!?!?!??! 🙂

My advice, go over everything. You don't need 4 more points, you need 75 more points.

I agree with CMaxwell. You need 75 points. Clearly your studying has some holes. I would reschedule the exam and take your time going over the material. Do the multiple choice and the sims.

You didn't mention the study materials that you use?

I used Becker, with paper based WTB book. 3rd time around, I'm using NINJA MCQ.

Thanks for your responses. My underlying assumption is that I retained some knowledge from previous two passes. I do not believe I should be starting from scratch. Yes, there are some holes and that's my focus. I wont ignore the other areas – just need to “brush up” on those with cursory review and focus on MCQ.

I wouldn't start from scratch. I would begin on my weakest areas and then work on your stronger areas. You don't want to forget anything you have learned in your stronger areas.

That's been my attack with my FAR retake. I'm focusing on my weak areas first. I do progress tests frequently to keep the material fresh while working on other sections.

I'm retaking Reg for the 3rd time as well (passed everything else 1st try!). First time through I was pushed for time, I knew I wasn't going to pass, but thought it would be a good barometer of where I was. I got a 65, took it again after reviewing all MCQ and SIMS once but not really having time to go back and really work through my tough areas, and got a 72.

My plan for this time is to read through the chapters taking notes, do my flagged MCQs and make notes off of the ones I still get wrong or ones I'm shaky on. I'm going to do every single simulation I can get my hands on and I'm going to be doing periodic reviews of all of the sections to keep things fresh.

I'm so tired of this material I could scream, so I am doing everything I can to pass this time.

Also, I suck at rote memorization, but I think I'm going to have to work really hard at some memory aids.

Don't underestimate Governmental and Non-for-profit. Know your formulas, know consolidated financial statements, equity method, extraordinary/unusual items.

I don't remember the SIMS in FAR being quite as detailed as the ones I'm seeing in REG (maybe they were and I just successfully blocked the memory!).

I've used Roger for everything, but since I've taken REG twice and failed, I've gotten a Becker book and am using the Wiley test bank I had leftover from the Roger course before he switched over to his “new and improved” test bank (ask me what I think of that!). I'm going through the MCQ test bank and doing all the questions I flagged on my previous studies and am making notes from the ones I struggle with or get wrong. I'm also reading the Becker text which I'm finding particularly helpful as it's written differently than the Roger book; I don't know that it's necessarily better, but I needed a different perspective.

Also, I'm planning on doing comprehensive MCQ reviews as well as intensely concentrate on the simulations so I hopefully know them backward and forward. I may even venture over to the Roger software and try some of the SIMS there for variety.

@Evwy_Mom, yes, 2nd time around, I did a TON of memorization and that helped, especially with the Individual Tax portion. I still dont think I did enough though.
