So I just finished R2 in Becker today (wrapped up individual taxation). I’ve been studying for 7 days today. I didn’t find any of the material exceptionally challenging (calculation wise). I’ve been scoring decently on multiple choice, but it’s right after I watch the lectures so it’s all still fresh.

Unfortunately……….. The amount of rules and exceptions is absolutely insane…. I skimmed over R3-R8 and it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down. So let’s say I reach R8 and have about 60-70 pages of notes on rules and exceptions, it just doesn’t seem feasible to be honest.

For BEC/FAR/AUD the formula for success was understanding concepts. It seems like for REG the case is ultimate memorization. Correct me if I’m mistaken.

I have plenty of time before I test (Nov 2), and I plan on being done studying by October 15th with 2 weeks of revision but this insane amount of memorization is disheartening to be honest.

Any views by people who passed?

For people who scored 70-74, what did you do wrong?

The only positive from all of this is when Gearty said Olinto will do chapters 5-8. **** YES. I need to pass this exam, I can’t go through anymore of Gearty EVER again.

I can tell you it gets better. I was very concerned with the amount of rules/exceptions/etc that would have to be memorized when I began as well, and did the flip through of the book hoping to see better topics and nothing made me feel better. But once you get to 5-8 they are a breeze compared to tax heavy 1-4. Not near as many minute details to remember. I am in my last week of review now, and I am finally starting to feel good about the material. It would probably be helpful to start a cheat sheet as you learn, I wish I had all the seemingly most important things in one spot. But I'm hoping Becker's final review will help me feel like I can wrap my brain around all of it at once.

    AUD 85 (2/12) Using Becker
    FAR 81 (5/12)
    BEC 79 (7/13)
    REG 85 (10/1)

Flashcards are your best friends for REG. There is a significant amount of memorization involved but it is very much doable. I passed REG on my fourth try with the help of RogerCPA and a thick stack of flashcards. Make the flashcards yourself because writing the facts down helps to organize them in your head.

Congrats on the three passed sections and best of luck!

REG, despite what you might think, is doable. It may be hairier than a mammoth with a gland problem and as twisted as something very twisty….but it is doable. If you're having trouble focusing on the intricacies of the tax code….get the RogerCPA review and reserve three weeks towards the end to do it. Trust me, you won't be bored. You're all intelligent, highly dedicated people who can slaughter this section and make it marinate in its own blood.

    Good luck!
