I’m currently studying for REG, and I’m having a hard time retaining the tax concepts. Can someone please give me some advice or strategies on how to memorize these concepts.

I’m using the Gleim review course, and I want to supplement it with another textbook that will explain the concepts better. I would like a book that provides a lot of examples. What are some good textbook recommendations?

I used my old textbook from school as a refresher for topics I wasn't strong about.

It's a little old, but the various modules will be a good warmup to the actual CPA review materials you plan to use.

Ninja notes and ninja audio very helpful. I keep rewriting the notes and listen to audio non stop. Annoying a bit but helps.

Thank you both for your help. Does anyone have any suggestions for memorizing formulas? A lot of the formulas in REG seem almost impossible to memorize.

If you have access to old Becker materials (mcqs/sims), or Ninja (mcqs/sims), or AICPA released exam Q/As, or if you have time to watch CPA exam videos, that will do too.

No offense intended but too often I see the question “how do I memorize this” theme among CPA testtakers.

It's incredibly wrong-headed. I know, because when I first started studying that was my frustration. You tend to lose the forest through the trees.

Instead, try take a step back. Just try to understand the topic(s) you are having extra trouble with. That may require to spend an extra day away from NINJA/Becker/Yaeger/etc materials. Research articles online about (eg) partnership basis. Then, assemble CPA review MCQ question solutions on the subject. Then summarize in your own words the most important aspects of the basis calculations.

Then with the notes in front of you, tackle a few MCQ questions.

Then try a few other MCQs on the topic without the notes.

Yes, don't be afraid to take smaller steps to the goal of Understanding what you need for exam day.

Don't try to grasp it all at once. eg That's why I say memorizing for memorizing's sake is counterproductive.

You'll get through this. Keep at it.
