Hey All – about to take REG at the end of October as I plan on finishing up my final exam. Any advice from those who have taken REG for someone like myself who has no experience in public accounting? I work as a senior accountant for a Fortune 500 company. My experience ties much closer to the other exams than REG. I know many of you have minimal tax experience as there are CPA candidates who earn their CPA prior to obtaining work experience in tax. I would appreciate a few helpful pointers or tips to approach this exam. I am using the Roger Review program with the Wiley test bank. I plan in buying Jeff’s 10 point combo notes as i have found them extremely helpful. Thanks fellow ninjas!

I haven't taken REG yet…but would just say in general to not let your unfamiliarity scare you too much. I just took FAR a bit ago, and my total accounting experience is working for a small-town tax accounting firm whose biggest client has about 20 employees. So, everything on FAR was totally out of left-field! (Same for Auditing which I'm working on now – my boss isn't a CPA, so I've never seen a real audit.) However, the materials are prepared to cover the topic inside and out even for those who don't know anything about it, so you should be OK. I used Wiley books and WTB and got an 83 with about 6 weeks of study…so, if you've got more like 3 months, I'm sure you'll be fine with REG!

And…just because I do work with taxes doesn't mean that REG will be any better for me. 😛 Half of it is business law (which you might actually be more familiar with than I am…) and the other half is corporate taxes. From the questions I've seen posted on here, it's mostly issues related to large corporations, more like your Fortune 500 employer! So you might know more than you think you do, but even if you don't, the materials should prepare you thoroughly.
