I am planning on taking REG towards the end of January. I currently work part time, and typically study 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. Is a months worth of studying enough for REG given my schedule? Can someone share their study time experience for REG? I understand everyone is different but still looking for a general idea from those who have passed. Thanks!

I recommend studying the tax part first. Leave business law for last. That way if you run out of time, you will rush through the less important part.

As you are studying basis in tax, take notes down so that you do not confuse c-corps vs s-corps vs partnerships. I did not do this and kept confusing the c-corps with partnerships. Basis is very important. Don't worry about phase-outs or figures that change from year to year.

Yeah, basis is SO important. I would honestly CONQUER tax and know the ins n out. Then, use the last few days to cram for BLaw, but I think that's more effective. It was sprinkled throughout the exam. Follow the CSO. I wished I used that more when I started studying, would have been better.

hasy: I don't have a lot of time to study for REG and was wondering which part I could cut down on. My thought was go through the tax part and know it well and leave whatever left over time for laws. I was afraid I may have to spend as much time on law as I do on tax which means I will not have enough time. Your comment was helpful.

@Goingallin BLaw is 20% of the exam. These could be your easy points to get. You will be able to run through the chapters quickly and then hit MCQs but I would not recommend cutting the study on this section down too much. DO study Professional Ethics and Responsibilities!

Professional ethics and responsibilities plus business law make up 40% of the exam. At least go over business law one time. don't skip it.

Make sure you know how to work with each different corporate entity from beg to end, C-Corps, S-Corps, partnerships, trusts, etc etc. I wasn't able to fully review the last becker chapter like I wish I had but still managed to pass. I did see business law though, but if you are short on time yes make sure the entities and basic tax code stuff is covered.

Put a high priority on chapters relating to tax and estate and gifts. As others mentioned Professional Ethics and Responsibilities is an important piece too. I had business law questions on my exam, but they were broad and didn't get deep into the minutiae. I wound up with a 70 when I took it last time and it was because I underestimated the C and S Corp section. Really hammer that section.

I think business law is a bigger part of the exam than indicated by people above…yes, tax is the heart, but that means it's about %50 or so? I don't remember exact percentage.

That wouldn't have been enough for me to feel comfortable…but I have a bad memory and had no background in tax.

I think I put in around 250 hours for REG and B-Law was a big part of my exam

@NeedsA75, those 250 hours sure show on your REG score, better to be over than under prepared. That way you only suffer each section once.
