Know corporate tax and estate tax inside out. Individual taxation is less important. My test was mainly focused on tax. I had very few law questions on the first two testlets. Additionally, there were no law questions on the simulations.

I think we all give way too much credence to the importance of virtually everything other than hard work. Whether you are playing football or baseball or studying for intermediate accounting or preparing for the CPA Exam, there really is absolutely nothing that takes the place of hard work. It is hard to get successful at anything without hard work.

Tax is 2/3 and the law area is 1/3. Estate tax got a lot less complicated in 2010. I think key areas to memorize are the Alternative Min. tax formula, mom&pop exception for rental, fixed asset write off of $250k with phase out over $800k, as well as the general % for individual taxation (medical, charity, loss, deduction, exemptions).

You don't need to memorize all the little phase outs, just have a general idea of the key areas that seem to come up repeatedly.

Quick question, so that whole small business act was signed today, will that potentially be on my exam in November? They change some of the section 179 depreciation amounts and stuff like that, just got an email about it at work. I feel like they won't and I think I read something about a 6 mth window, but am not sure if this new stuff will be on the exam? Thanks!

6mo window to come into affect is what I am aware of. Don't worry about it.

if i remember correctly, becker suggested having a general idea of the ceilings but not on the actual figures, what grearty kept calling the ‘robin hood' rule: they're either rich or poor. that seems about right.

in general, you're not gonna like this answer but you need to be prepared for everything. everyone's test is different. for me, my reg was heavier on the law/ethics sections than I expected. i felt like there were significant areas of tax i never got tested on. those percentages of material covered breakdowns you see in becker are just guidelines. it seems based on everyone's comments about what they saw the breakout of material is kind of random to a degree.

i know you're going to feel frustrated if you studied hard on something you consider a difficult area and then have it not show up on the test. But Reg's got a lot of material. there will be material left out of your exam and you need to be prepared.
