Insiyah24: You are subject to the recapture rule in the third year if the alimony you pay in the third year decreases by more than $15,000 from the second year or the alimony you pay in the second and third years decreases significantly from the alimony you pay in the first year. There's a worksheet in the IRS publication that walks you through the calculation: https://www.irs.gov/publications/p504/ar02.html#en_US_2012_publink1000176011

Skrier: Agreed (: However, that's not covered in Becker at all, and I think it's not heavily tested on the exam. I didn't have one single question (at least that I can remember) and I already took the exam twice (; So I think you're probably ok not remembering it.

Good Luck and hopefully the third time is the charm for you!

Vienna and Skrier, I'm using Becker too and didn't see anything about alimony recapture. Thanks for posting that up. This is going to be my 4 time taking it but it has been a year and half since the last time I took it.

Does you guys do the simulations in the software? Do you feel it helps? I had done a sim when I was studying for my first test and I felt that it didn't really help. What do you guys think?

    Thanks!
