    Hi,

Can someone please help on these?

    1) Can you clarify on business expense deduction? If an employee traveled to a different city for a business conference and his family went with him as a side vacation would the business expense deduction can only be taken for HIS expenses only right (given that it was not reimbursed)? Like only HIS fee for the air fare, hotel, 50% of meals and entertainment, travel, and other costs incurred on the days that he spent doing business related stuffs (i.e. 4 out of 5 days was spent on conference business and on the last day he went to an amusement park with his family)?

    2) If your spouse dies during the yr, you would still file MFJ for that year and Qualifying widow for the next 2 yrs?

    FAR: 62;79
    AUD: 76
    REG:67; 77
    BEC: 68;66; 12/05/13

@journhi….I believe you are correct on the business expenses. Only the portion related to the business travel would be deductible.

As for the spouse dying during the year, yes it would be MFJ for the remainder of the year, but to file Qualifying Widower for the two subsequent years the requirements must be met. i.e. maintains a household for a dependent child and has not remarried.
