AnonymousInactiveOk, I got the correct answer for this problem per ninja (because given the options I assumed the problem was doing something I think is not correct. I don't think the actual correct answer is listed. Let me know what you think the answer to this problem should be.

yassyMember@Amay and @CPAMommyof3 — I haven't used Ninja MCQ's for my other exams, but on CPA Excel I was averaging in the low 70's when I passed FAR and BEC (on the dot), and in the 80's when I passed Audit.
Thank you both for your input! Rescheduled for the 10th and took most of the day to relax because I felt like my brain needed a break lol. It worked out well since now I feel refreshed to push through the next three days. I'm so nervous because it's my last one and I want to be done!
FAR 75 (8/21/13)
AUD 72 (10/29/13) 74 (2/12/14) 84! (04/01/14)

AnonymousInactive@Darcer
$9,000 Total Deductible Medical Expenses
<4,000> Reimbursement
<4,000> 10% of AGI
$1,000
======
Is that correct?
July 7, 2014 at 1:59 am #591281
AnonymousInactive@Amor, correct, but here is my disagreement and why I think the answer should be 0 (zero)
Problem states that AGI is 40k, so we already should have accounted for the medical insurance premiums as they are an “above the line” deduction.
Therefore the itemized deductions are 5000 + 1000. We were reimbursed 4000. We have 2000 left but that is below the 10% of AGI threshold.
I think the problem should say “gross income is $40K” not adj. gross income is $40k.
Can you let me know if I am wrong about this?

AmayMember@j Yes. This is the question I was working on. I thought it was 11k for both, but apparently I was wrong. The rules just look so complicated for this I told myself I would come back to it. Maybe it's just about memorizing the phase-outs, which I was not planning on spending too much time on.
Gene and Olive Olson are married and file a joint return in 2014. The Olsons are both active participants in qualified retirement plans. The Olsons have adjusted gross income of $106,000 for 2014 and each contributed $5,500 to a traditional IRA. What is the deduction for IRA contributions for the Olsons in 2014?
A.$0
B.$5,000
C.$5,500
D.$11,000
Answer is C: In 2014, the phaseout of the IRA deduction for married taxpayers participating in another pension plan filing jointly exists for AGI between $96,000 and $116,000. Since their AGI is halfway between $96,000 and $116,000, only half of the $11,000 is deductible.

AnonymousInactive@Amay–I've seen that question at least 3 times and I HATE it! Who would remember that obscure crap? The phaseouts and the halfway point… That is just one example of why I don't like REG.
