    @ Melans

Here is the IRS lingo regarding the 65 and older 7.5% rule versus the 10% rule for those under 65 which may help:

    https://www.irs.gov/Individuals/2013-Changes-to-Itemized-Deduction-for-Medical-Expenses

I feel like the question is tricky because it doesn't say Tom is over 65, but it clearly state his mother-in-law is 70. Perhaps since the expenditures relate to someone over 65 you apply the 7.5% rule?

    REG - 77*, 74, 70, 71, 82
    AUD - 71, 68, 71, 83
    BEC - 75
    FAR - 65, 70, 72, 75

    * = Lost credit due to the 18 month rule

@melans For the medical expenses deduction you can make payments on behalf of spouse or dependent. If its a dependent it doesn't matter that they made over the exemption amount of (3,950) just needs to be supported by taxpayer by over 50%, Citizen of U.S, Lives with taxpayer or relative.

    Hi Everyone,

I just passed BEC by the skin of my teeth. I am hoping to pass REG in August. Then I have saved AUD for last. I am hoping because I have been an auditor for the last 7 years (I got a late start on the CPA exam) I will be able to comfortably pass it. Good luck everyone!

    FAR - 81 (12/04/13)
    BEC - 75 (05/30/14)
    REG - Aug 2014
    AUD - Oct 2014!

I can't think of many things more boring than this 2-hour BLaw1 lecture on contracts.

@Melans I think this is a case of the software not updating that question & answer. The Taxpayer (or spouse) has to be 65 or older in order to get the 7.5% floor, everyone else is 10%. There is almost no way that he could be over 65 if his Mother in Law is 70…

    REG - 86
    FAR - 74,
    BEC - 72,
    AUD -73,

Anyone have a good trick or source for remembering basis rules? I think I have it down but then I look at the problems and get so confused!

    FAR 75 (8/21/13)
    AUD 72 (10/29/13) 74 (2/12/14) 84! (04/01/14)
    BEC 75 (11/27/13)
    REG 72 (05/29/14) 74 (07/10/14) 86 and DONE! (10/02/14)

I have a quick question, when a daughter purchases stock from her father on January 1, 2013 and later she sells the stock on June 30, 2013 at a profit what basis should she use for tax purposes?

If anybody can help me on this I'd really appreciate it. Is it the same as the gift tax rules?

I'm using becker and the ninja notes.

@namaci I think she would use the purchase price as her basis, but when she sells the stock she can offset the gain by any unrecognized losses that her father was not able to deduct (due to it being a related party transaction).

    Example:

TP sold stock to S, his brother, for $1,000. TP had an adjusted basis in the stock of $2,500, but cannot deduct the realized loss of $1,500 because S is a related party. S takes a basis in the stock of $1,000. If S eventually sells the stock to an unrelated third party for $1,800, S can offset the $800 gain with $800 of the deferred loss. The remainder of the deferred loss ($700) is not recognized.

    FAR 75 (8/21/13)
    AUD 72 (10/29/13) 74 (2/12/14) 84! (04/01/14)
    BEC 75 (11/27/13)
    REG 72 (05/29/14) 74 (07/10/14) 86 and DONE! (10/02/14)

I got REG 2014 Becker (Brand New) V.10 extra. I am willing to swap it with Becker REG Flashcards.

I really like flashcards in index cards, individually bundled in rubber bands per chapter.

I bought my flashcards in December 2012. I want to use 2014 to test for REG in Q3.
