robertdtsMemberNew to the forum…working through my last section: REG
Apparently I am a glutton for punishment: 74 in the 1st quarter 2014, and 74 yet again for the 2nd quarter 2014. I am using Becker for my study material, however, I'm looking for something that will get me over the hump as I only have two more windows to get this behind me before I start losing credit. I'm currently looking over CPA Ninja, 10 Point Combo, to see if it might be able to help me finally put this last part to bed. Has anyone used this material? If so, would you recommend it?
Thanks!
TO DATE:
AUD: 85 (11/13)
BEC: 79 (5/13)
FAR: 77 (8/13)
REG: 74 (1/14), 74 (5/14)

robertdtsMemberBTW…have paid the fee for REG, waiting on the NTS. Hoping to lock this bad boy in for late July…giving me about 6 weeks to study.

jaclynnhMemberHi Guys! I'm coming here for some motivation, I found out on Sunday that I failed REG (again).
As you can see from my signature, it's been a long journey for me. I know I can do it!.. I mean I've already passed REG before but unfortunately it fell out of my 18 month window while I was tackling FAR.
I work for the BIG 4, in my third year, in the corporate tax department. One might think I'd be good to go on this exam however, I have horrible testing anxiety and with my schedule makes it pretty tough to study during the week. I'm a bit nervous trying to cram in studying on top of a looming busy season which as slowly begun for me.
I've used Becker the first time I passed (back in 2011) then I switched to CPAExcel for tries 2 and 3 and this last time I used NINJA notes and the WTB. Not sure where to go from here as far as study materials go… advice?
REG - 77*, 74, 70, 71, 82
AUD - 71, 68, 71, 83
BEC - 75
FAR - 65, 70, 72, 75* = Lost credit due to the 18 month rule

jaclynnhMemberI have the NINJA notes and I think they are great as a review tool. I printed them out and wrote some additional notes to myself to re-jog my memory.
I also have the NINJA audio however I cannot provide solid feedback since I did not utilize it properly. I realized it is hard for me to listen to it since I never drive anywhere (I walk 15 minutes to work). Also, listening to it at work is a no-go since I tend to need to focus on my tasks.
REG - 77*, 74, 70, 71, 82
AUD - 71, 68, 71, 83
BEC - 75
FAR - 65, 70, 72, 75* = Lost credit due to the 18 month rule

AnonymousInactive@Robert and @Jaclyn, I highly recommend the ninja test bank. I was averaging in the mid 80's for the Wiley practice exams and was utterly shocked when I received (yet another) failing grade. So I purchased the ninja test bank primarily because they are all AICPA questions…I'm thinking that my problem may be confusion on the wording of the questions because I work them out perfectly on the scratch paper and then have no idea what number I'm supposed to type in for the sims answers. I'm averaging a 73 in ninja right now (which is right in line with my past test grades), so I figure if I can get in the 80's using this bank, I should be good to go for round three.
It's under $50, so I say try it because I have found that the questions, wording, and topics are different than what I experienced using the other test bank.
Hope this helps!

AnonymousInactive@robertdts I highly recommend the 10 point combo. I print out the notes and re-write them, listen to the audio to/from work, and look at flash cards when I am somewhere waiting (like at the dr or grocery store line). I feel my passing these tests is due to the Ninja products, I highly recommend them.

AnonymousInactivewow done with individual tax, all the rules, exception to the rules, thresholds, and phase outs are awsome. I hope i get tested on the most obscure rules -_-

ShutterBug84xMemberStill feeling like I don't really know where to start on Regulation — so I just bought 400 cards to start doing flash cards. I think my biggest problem would be not getting a rounded, firm grasp on everything. I seem to only remember a small percentage of the material. Anyway…I was thinking that flash cards (hand written) would be a more effective use of my time? Since its still hand written – and I can get a more effective use for studying later. I think so anyway. Thoughts?

AnonymousInactiveI tried doing that for audit and i figured out i'm really bad at making flashcards and it was a big waste of time. This time around i elected to take notes on each chapter on everything and my notes are around 10 pages per chapter which i find very useful and very easy to read over and go through. I got becker flashcards this time and they make pretty good flashcards so i can test my knowledge in a different way. But anything hand written is always a good tool to help you memorize the information. But i've also never made flashcards ever in my school career so it probably was not a wise decision for me to try now. What ever you do you just wanna make sure its an effective use of your time and will help you remember the information better.

ShutterBug84xMember@Eliasm6 Thanks for your input. It's funny you say notes work for you better. I feel like whenever I take notes I never use them…I've always been better with flash cards. Easier for me to cart around I suppose. Now I did do some for Audit…but they were on my computer/iPad and I didn't use them nearly enough. I think it's probably a good idea to go back to hand written…if only for the fact that they will be hand written. Also, I already feel like this forum is already helping me. So nice to talk to people going through the same thing I am. Roger has a pretty solid forum, but there's not that much support there.

AnonymousInactive@shutterbug the thing for me is i was looking at my flashcards for audit and like i said i'm very bad at making them so i was looking at a stack of 450 flash cards thinking “do i really want to go through these shitty flash cards” that answer was no so i wrote them and never used them. But none the less well made flashcards do have a benefit of testing your knowledge in a different way then having 4 answers to choose so it really makes you know your concepts. I'm appreciative of the Becker flashcards on my phone i can review whenever i don't have a book or computer in front of me.

MelansMemberTom paid the medical expenses of his mother-in-law, age 70. Although Tom provided more than half the support, she does not qualify as Tom's dependent because she had gross income of $5,000. This expenditure is:
1. A deduction from adjusted gross income, subject to a 7.5% AGI floor.
2. Not deductible.
3. A deduction to arrive at adjusted gross income.
4. A deduction from adjusted gross income, subject to a 2% AGI floor.
Choice “1” is correct. Medical expenses are itemized deductions (from AGI), subject to a 7.5% AGI floor for taxpayers age 65 and older.
Note: The definition of “dependent” for purposes of taking the medical expenses for that person as an itemized deduction does not consider the dependent's gross income. Thus, there is no limitation to a dependent's gross income when it relates to medical or dental expenses. The remaining dependency tests apply and Tom's mother-in-law meets those tests.
Choice “3” is incorrect. Medical expenses are an itemized deduction from adjusted gross income, not an adjustment to arrive at adjusted gross income.
Choice “4” is incorrect. Medical expenses are subject to a 7.5% AGI floor; not 2%.
Choice “2” is incorrect. See above explanation.
If you pay medical expenses of someone over 65 your deduction is 7.5%? It doesn't say anywhere that Tom is over 70? This question lost me or I am missing something…. Can anyone help??
AUD 7/30/12 73; 12/2/13 85
BEC 7/19/13 81
REG 8/2/14 83

AnonymousInactiveAfter a not so great score on REG the last testing window I'm back at it. What do you guys recommend an average score on multiple choice quesitons on a section before I move onto the next one? I don't think I gave myself enough time with the questions and SIMS before going into the exam so that is what I am focusing on this time around.
