This might be a dumb question, but I still don't understand it: If capital gains and dividends for individuals are taxed at different rates as ordinary income, why are they both in the same section as ordinary income on a 1040?

    @foxcroftdr,

I think that the 4500 isn't deductible because it was used for personal interest expense.

So I have had some set backs and was not supposed to start this until I was done with FAR and AUD, but with tax season here I feel this is the best to focus on. I have recently found out my fiancee will not be deploying so it has given me a whole new perspective. Working on finishing Chapter 1 in Becker by the end of the day. Any tips on REG from anyone? I sat for it about 2 years ago and passed on first try, but I am worried it was luck. Good luck everyone!!!!

@sapna1208 I have not scheduled yet. I am hoping for early April so I can do AUD by end of May before the changes. I want to make sure I get through a good portion before I register again.

    Hi Silliepanda:

Glad to hear that you are doing great . ๐Ÿ™‚

Concentrate on tax areas more before you move on to business law.Chapter 1 and chapter 2 are purely based on individual taxation. Try to take (chapter 1 and chapter 2) quiz and do simulation before you move to corporation tax chapter. last not least get familiar with tax forms (don't memorize it) .and aut literature..

    Good luck xxxxx

PS: i missed you in the FAR group ๐Ÿ˜€

I have two questions. First for anyone who bought the ninja audio how are you using it? Are you listening and taking notes like you would with your primary study materials or are you listening to it in the car, at work, when you have free time, etc.?

My second question is about a MC from Becker's R1 study materials. Here's the question.

John and Mary were divorced last year. The divorce decree provides that John pay alimony of $10,000 per year, to be reduced by 20% on their child's 18th birthday. During the current year, John paid $7,000 directly to Mary and $3,000 to Spring College for Mary's tuition. What amount of these payments should be reported as income in Mary's current year income tax return?

    a. $5,600

    b. $8,000

    c. $10,000

    d. $8,600

The answer is b. I don't see where they tell you the age of the child so you can determine what the alimony should be. If a question tells you something like that are you supposed to assume that you need to factor that into your answer even if they don't give you more information?

@lsutigers03 – I will reply despite my dislike for all things LSU, especially in 2003 when they beat my Sooners in the Nat'l title game… ๐Ÿ™ lol

I think you are over-thinking the question. I have had trouble with that too sometimes because some questions are so twisted and some are really straight-forward. This one is straight forward. If they were going to throw that curve ball at you (actual age of the child) they would have basically told you how old the kid was during the year. Notice it is Mary's (the mom) tuition and not the kid's, which would lead me to believe the kid is still under 18 since they didn't say otherwise.

    FAR - 81 (8/31/12)
    AUD - 93 (10/19/12)
    BEC - 79 (11/27/12)
    REG - 92 (2/8/13) DONE! All 1st attempt!

@Rukus – Haha yeah I can see where your dislike comes from. At least Oklahoma wasn't on the losing end of a game like the 2011 National title game like LSU was. That was embarrassing.

As to your response that's what I thought as well but here's the explanation of the answer.

Alimony would be income to Mary while child support would not. Funds qualify as child support only if 1) a specific amount is fixed or is contingent on the child's status (e.g., reaching a certain age), 2) it is paid solely for the support of minor children, and 3) it is payable by decree, instrument or agreement. The actual use of the funds is irrelevant to the issue. In this case, $2,000 (20% ร— $10,000) qualifies as child support. The other $8,000 is alimony, which would be income to Mary.

Is anyone else having a difficult time with the REG research questions. It seems like a search never takes you to the appropriate section. I even tried using becker's suggested keywords to search and the answer did not show up in the search results.

What strategies are working for you guys? Please share.
