REG Study Advice

Good morning all. Just for some quick info on me……I have a few years of experience in public (audit) and have been using Becker for my study materials. I took AUD and BEC within the past few months and breezed through them with a 92 and 87, respectively. I recently started to study for REG and it is a very different experience for me. When I studied for AUD & BEC, I was regularly getting 70’s, 80’s and 90’s on MCQ’s on the first try and had a clear grasp on the SIMS. It was very natural to me, and although it required hammering out a lot of questions to fully understand some topics, it always felt logical to me and I always felt like I had a really solid comprehension of the material. In studying for REG, I don’t have anywhere near the same confidence level. I find myself stopping the lectures over and over to jot down extra notes and re-read concepts and rules/exceptions. I absolutely hated tax in college and I hate it even more now. Certainly not discouraged at this point because I’m just starting out and I know that it will start to come together at some point, but just wanted to seek advice from other who may have had similar experiences. The goal is to get it right the first time. I feel like this will be my biggest hurdle, so just wanted to hear from others who aren’t strong in tax anything that they might have done differently to get this exam behind them. Thanks very much for your time and best of luck to all.

Kinda odd but your experience is the same as mine I use Gleim. I got a 93 and an 85 on BEC and Aud respectively but Reg I have just pushed back 2x to May 31st. I can't even pass the mcqs in the prep software let alone the sims. Reg is insane but I have no public accounting experience and zero experience with taxes

I decided to take REG first since I have a distaste for tax and law. The material is tough and there are a ton of rules, exceptions, and phase-outs to memorize. I don't have any experience with the other 3 parts of the exam, but I know what you're describing is how I found myself studying for REG (as far as note taking and stopping lectures).

I think you're approaching it correctly. Stop when you need to and really learn the material. I breezed through very few of the MCQ sections with an 80% or above in REG. I scored about 75 and 83 in the Becker REG finals and about an 85 on a WTB final. I find out my actual score tomorrow or Monday, but I feel okay about it based on my prep. The most important thing is to comprehend the material the first time around so you only have to review it at the end.

    REG - 88 - 8 Weeks (Becker, Ninja Audio/Flashcards, Wiley TB)
    FAR - 87 - 10 Weeks (Becker, Ninja Audio)
AUD - 98 - 6 Weeks (Becker, Ninja Audio, Ninja MCQ)
    BEC - 87 - 2 Weeks (Becker & Ninja Audio)

I started studying for REG recently. I am using Gleim. Anyone agree that it's boring?! Ah, how I hate taxes!!! It probably isn't boring but I dislike all the minor rules/exceptions and not to mention there is lot of info to memorize. I really can't memorize. Hopefully, as I get further into the book/MCQs, things will start to click. I am aiming to take this in April. Will update you guys if I come across any easier or better study strategy. Good to all studying and waiting for scores. 🙂

    FAR - 81 (2/13), Expired. 🙁 Retake 79 (11/14)
    AUD - 63 (10/13), 71 (2/14), 69 (7/14), 81 (10/14) Finally!!!
    BEC - 77 (2/14)
    REG - 78 (5/14)

The first mistake I made on my first attempt at REG was I didn't realize the MCQ are still broke up as 40% Blaw and Responsibility and 60% tax even though SIMS are all tax.

Second, I didn't focus enough on understanding tax.

Don't worry so much about memorizing phase-out numbers. There are some numbers you may want to memorize (like the mom and pop exception), it's more important to understand the concepts.

I made the above changes and faired much better on my second try. Hope it helps you.
