Just took REG today… I got two research tasks on my simulation part, is this a bad sign? Lots of my friends who passed only got 1 research tasks and they said they never heard abt 2 research tasks… Does this mean I will fail???

ok, first off are you really asking if 2 research questions would indicate you failed? I am confused as to what you are even asking…no, the AICPA doesn't give 2 research to people that they are planning on failing. The Sims are random and it is very possible to get 2 research as many others have indicated on this very forum. There really is no correlation between how many research questions you get and passing/failing.

Secondly, did you find what they were asking for? If so, then honestly you are lucky to have gotten 2 research questions as I believe they are easier points than the Sims.

I don't get it, aren't there 6 task base sim, how come you only got 2? and what are the topics of those two?

There are 6 SIMS on REG, but one or two of them are research questions i.e. you're given a situation and asked to provide the paragraph number in the standards where you can find the answer.

If you read some of the previous threads on REG, you'll see that there isn't really a good way to study for the SIMS. You should do enough practice SIMS to be familiar with the formats you might see; look at the ones on the aicpa site and in the review materials you're using. However, there are so many possible potential questions that doing practice SIMS isn't a very effective way of preparing. The best thing to do is to solidify your knowledge by doing as many MCQ as possible. Also, allow plenty of time for the SIMS – I'd recommend 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.

@vi3t – i had 7 total sims, 2 of which were research.

in terms of studying, its definitely hard to prepare… first, id suggest just getting comfortable overall with the material – knowing how to do a sim won't help if you dont know the material youre being tested on.

after youre comfortable with the material, i'd suggest working some problems out of a college textbook if you have one around. handwriting complicated problems on corp or individual income tax is probably most similar to what you'll do on the test.

I took REG last week and only got one research. It took me a while to find the answer, but I found it. I would have welcomed another!!! They're such easy points.

Does anybody know if they have the same weight as a lengthy sim question?

@smrichard: Yes there are worth the same. The 40% is divided equally among the Sims as far as I understand.

@valueofnothing: uhm, you sure you had 7 Sims on REG? REG only contains 6 Sims and at least one is going to be research. There should not be 7 Sims, regardless of pre-test questions they plan to eliminate. Only FAR and AUD contain 7 Sims…

I totally agree with kb24's advice regarding preparing for the Sims…IMO I don't think it is worth the time to practice a bunch of Sims…I think going over questions and creating and rewriting your notes is a MUCH better use of your time…If you have unlimited time, then sure…do every single question, Sim, lecture, book, resource available…but most of us have some sort of time constraints…
