Should I study the items that have the note “expired 12/31/11, not yet extended to 2012 at the printing of this text”? This note is in the Becker Reg review on some adjustments/itemized deductions. Were they all extended? Will the exam test them regardless if extended or not? Thanks!

Excellent question. I'm confused as to what we need to know don't need to know for the tax changes too.

    Especially regarding Section 179.

Section 179 was extended and rules are the same as 2011 ($500,000 maximum, phase out above $2,000,000 of assets), although I am keeping in mind the temporary 2012 rules ($139,000 maximum, etc.). I assume they are going to be very specific on these kinds of questions with respect to what to use (or at least I hope).

    So is 179:

    2011: $500k

    2012: $139k

    2013: $500k

I thought we would only be tested on the 2012 rules… or are you suggesting they may throw some tricks in there and ask both 2011 and 2012 questions and we will need to pay extra attention to the dates and answer accordingly. Is this the case for all REG questions? Are we tested on previous years, current year, and the changes between the two?

    frick.

I thought we only needed to know the 2012 rules.

    ok…. BECKER responded….

    Hi Jacquelyn,

Some were extended and some were not. We are working on online updates of all of these items. The AICPA has indicated to us that they will not test on any extended item until September of this year.

    I hope this helps.

so….. for those of us testing before September, I take this to mean we will NOT be tested on any item that says “expired 12/31/2011”. (But I suppose they could test us to see that we know it was indeed expired, and thus the answer would be $0 if it asked what the adjustment was, etc.).

    Am I interpreting this correctly?
