Either Wiley is wrong, or I’m confused.. I’m working on a problem where I have to calculate the taxable income of a single individual for her 2017 tax return. In the letter to her CPA, she wrote that she did not pay the real estate taxes until 2018, and I left it out of her 2017 itemized deductions. For Wiley’s calculation of her taxable income, the real estate taxes were included in 2017 Schedule A even though unpaid until 2018. Am I missing something here? Help!

Generally, RE taxes are taken as an itemized deduction in the year of the actual payment. For what you have described, it sounds like the Wiley software is wrong. Take a look at the corresponding mentoring section and see if other candidates have asked the question.

Where do I find that? It's one of the questions on an unlimited practice exam.

I see the mentoring section now. I'm going to post. Thank you!
