REG prep advice

I have 2 questions regarding REG prep.

    1) Regarding prep for the SIMS – does anyone have thoughts about the usefulness of Wiley books vs CPAExcel vs CPAReviewforfree? I have Wiley books & CPA Excel and don’t mind spending the $10 for CPAReviewforFree. Just trying to determine how close the SIMs in any of these are to actual exam?

    2) Speaking very generally, is it the case that approx 1/2 of the mcqs are related to blaw? I say this because blaw is supposedly ~35% of the material & I’m assuming the SIMs aren’t blaw heavy. (Yes I understand there are always exceptions related to that 2nd part.)

Any thoughts are much appreciated! Hopefully none of this violates that disclosure stuff lol.

I used Wiley/Becker SIMs for REG and felt Wiley sims were very beneficial. It forced me to understand the concepts, which is very important. I haven't used cpareviewforfree, but heard good things about it. Also, Gleim has good SIMs…again, haven't used it, but heard good things.

As far as b-law goes, I took REG 3x and SIMs have always been tax related while b-law was heavily tested in MCQs (during the last exam in Feb 2012).

I felt it was very important to read each chapter twice and do all the MCQs until you are scoring in high 80s. This way, I was really understanding the concepts and that made it easier when it came to applying them on the SIMs. Also, used the research tab for topics that are unfamiliar to you.

    Good Luck!

CPA628, thanks much for responding! Yeah I have a bit of forum info overload & was starting to lose track of who said what program is good for what section. Good to know that Wiley will work for the SIMs since that's always my fallback.

Obviously the reports are varied on how much blaw ends up on the actual exam but this helps me strategize. I'll do a lot of tax SIMs for prep (definitely heard those SIMs aren't too cool) and assume maybe 1/2 the mcqs are blaw. Anything to help get a handle on this beast!…
