I just started ninja MCQ the other day after finishing all of the study materials. It’s quite possibly the most frustrating thing to go through these and not remember the nuances that I studied 8 weeks ago. I feel like the material for half the questions wasn’t even mentioned in Wiley and can’t remember the rest of what’s being asked. I’m only a few hundred questions in but… Damn! Humbling isn’t even the right word after having tax dreams for the last few weeks. Just feels like nothing is clicking and it’s all in one ear and out the other.

It's perfectly normal to have a really bad trending when you first start NINJA. I was in the same boat. When I transitioned from Becker to NINJA, I was trending in the low 70's. It was very frustrating to say the least.

A couple of weeks ago I changed my strategy. I know that this sounds obvious but I stopped just slamming through MCQ as fast as I could and I started to really take my time with them. I would read the question carefully. Read the answers carefully. Select an answer and go over why I felt that it was the correct answer and why I felt the other were incorrect. If I ended up missing that question, I would stop and figure out why I missed that question. I went from averaging 60% on a set of 30 MCQ to an average of mid to high 80's. Today I notice the same thing. If I go really fast, I start to miss a lot more than I should At this point I realize that I need a break and come back a bit later.

Good luck and feel free to come over to the REG Q2 Study thread. Lots of good people over there sharing experiences, asking questions and helping each other out. I sit on April 16 for REG so I know what an experience this is.

I think you will do fine in the MCQ, but I would make sure you practice sims. They are killers in my opinion.

NINJA has successfully made me feel like failure was imminent twice in the past few months but I'm 2 for 2. Just keep hitting the mcq until test day.

@Bryguy..going through the same thing here. Extremely frustrated by my lack of keeping everything together and missing small details. Humbling is the right word and I'm constantly pissed by my low scores in Blaw…it's by far my weakest topic. 2nd weakest is Individual tax..no matter how much I practice and how close I think am to getting all the facts/exceptions straight, my Ninja score always surprises. me.

People here have pointed out that they usually score 10-15 point higher from the trending score in the actual exam .

Just make sure why you are right and why you are wrong and you should be fine .

I was using Wiley, not Ninja, but I was definitely trending about 60% the day before my REG exam. I made an 86. It happens. Don't worry!

Thanks for the reassurance guys. It's difficult because there's a ton of simple questions that I SHOULD know but it's just out of my memory at this point. I plan to get through all of the Ninja MCQ and probably MOST of the sims. Seems like most of you guys know the frustration that I'm feeling. I think I just needed to vent a bit. I'll keep plugging away and hope for the best.

For this time around, I worked most of the WTB and Ninja MCQs. I left 400 of the Blaw MCQs in Ninja, because I think there are too many Blaw questions in Ninja. I would focus on weak topics. I selected categories and did sets of 30 MCQs.

For example, I would choose:

-Ethics/Blaw/Federal Tax Process, and then

-Property Transactions/Ind/Entities Taxation

Tax was my weakness, so I felt I didn't need to study Blaw over and over again.

I walked into most of the exams feeling in no way prepared. Feeling failure is imminent does not mean failure is imminent. Sometimes you just need a little encouragement to get over the psychological games you play with yourself preparing for this exam. You could have a really great day studying and the next day bomb 90% of the questions you attempt and convince yourself you know nothing. I think you'll see your trending average go up as you get closer to the exam, even with only six days left. I would definitely practice SIMS when you need a break from the MCQ and now is the time to focus on your weak areas as much as possible. There is no need to repeat stuff you know over and over at this point. Take some refresher quizzes on those topics, but drill your weak areas hard. Good luck on the exam!
