Hi All,

So I just got my result back for REG (my first and only exam) and failed (only got 65). I studied for 3 months and was feeling pretty confident before the exam. Whilst the SIMS were tough, and I didn’t notice my MCQ’s getting too hard, maybe the 3rd one was harder, I thought I did ok nevertheless. Everyone says it’s hard to tell.

I was using Becker and also Ninja, but I would really like to know what I should do next to pass this? I have been looking through threads on here to see, should I persist with Becker, should I add another one like Roger or Yaeger?

Can I make up 10 points to get the 75 I need to pass? I know I have to start again but I literally have no idea where to start.

Usually this wouldn’t be an issue for me, but to repeat REG it costs me $835 as I am an international student who only has to sit one exam (IQEX) to get my CPA. I have completed the CA, and didn’t have too many worries there.

I would appreciate anyone’s tips on how to start tackling this again?

I know that there are threads dedicated specifically to each exam but I wanted everyone’s opinions.

I used only ninja mcq, but I am noticing something when others say they use ninja mcq.

I do about half as many questions in the same amount of time as others (using the stats they post). I think a lot of people are just blowing through the mcq and I do not, even if I get the answer right.

I also use what some might think are strange memory techniques. For example, I am studying for AUD now. One of the things I need to remember is that kiting goes along with the bank transfer schedule. So what I do is picture looking up in the sky at a kite with a bunch of BaTS flying next to the kite.

I had a lot of these types of images in my mind for REG. A lot of them were not G-rated, but you got to do what works for you.

Three months is too long, I wouldn't study for more than two for any one test. You may need a supplement for the retake if you have seen all of the MCQs on your software already. I would also follow the Ninja method.

Thanks for the responses. Feeling pretty average at the moment and now I know what some other people feel like after a fail.

Just to clarify, if I am using Becker, should I go through all the lectures again? I seriously can't stand listening to Tim Gearty again, but will do whatever it takes. Will start to make my own notes, I didn't do this on the first try.

Also I may purchase Wiley or Gleim as I have used the Ninja already.

@Bbrandenburg10 you say 3 months is too long. Is 7-8 weeks a reasonable time to re-do REG and sit for it?

I really cannot pay another $835 for this exam again.

You should have an idea of where your weak points are at after sitting for the exam. You really have to have a grasp on tax to pass REG. And, yes, it is possible to make up an extra 10 points.

You may need to change up your study strategy. Did you look over actual copies of tax forms? Did you read all of the wrong MCQ answers along with the correct answers? Do you have the MCQ's memorized?

You should go through lectures if that is the best way you learn. I personally ditched lectures after a second attempt simply because I didn't find them helpful after going through them once. You need to do what works best for your learning style.

Since you should start from scratch, I would say six to eight weeks is reasonable. For me, taking notes was key, but that is just how I learn. Some people get the Ninja notes and just rewrite them if they aren't good at taking their own.

Thanks guys, when do they release my score report, so I can see my weak areas (although I'm assuming most are weak/comparable)?

I have started today to study again for REG, I have chosen not to re-do the lectures (using Becker) but am going to go through the whole book again, and really try to understand every single MCQ. I may buy the WTB, although I have already used Ninja last time, so I will have lots of MCQ's.

Usually a week or two after the score release. Also for REG, if you already went through all the lectures and highlighted and underlined everything. I would just go through each section and read through it and the do the MCQ for each. This has been my technique and it seems to work well. You should do each MCQ a minimum of two times. Also, I wouldn't focus too much on the weaker/stronger report because many candidates, who focus on the weaker components become stronger in these areas but lose the knowledge from the previously strong areas.
