AnonymousInactiveT-minus 6 hours!
So excited to take this so i can be done studying (until audit at least). Im just gonna go in expecting to see some off the wall questions and try not to let them throw me off or waste too much time on them. I feel like I've studied pretty thoroughly, especially on tax which used to be my weak area. Best thing i can do now is just keep my focus for those 3 hours.
Crossing my fingers this is the last time i have to take REG!!

NGUYENMemberJust took REG an hour ago. The multiple choces are quite simple and straighforward. It's the simulations that kill!!!
Guess I will have to re-take it next window 🙁

Hope you did well though. It sounds like you probably did better than you think.

Lynn1234MemberNow I know everyone was NOT exaggerating about the simulations on REG! Just got done with the exam a few hrs ago. MCQ were so-so…either knew or you didn't. But sims…wow….I am fairly new at this whole CPA exam and boy does exam make me miserable. keeping my fingers crossed!

killakingParticipantJust sat and they threw 2 curve balls on the sims I know I got 4 out 6 but one of the 4 was real shaky so I dunno. the MC was like last time started easy middle was hard and wordy and last one was doable so I dont really care about the MC. The sims are the game changer and I got one research again. And time flew by my sims where harder last time but it seemed like I had plenty of time the first time smh.

pray475ParticipantI am with Killa King…the simulations were mind boggling to me…I am pretty nervous about how those went definately didn't go smooth. I did better on MC this time compared to the first time I took it but I think worse on the sims. guess we will see

REG- 73 – 2nd take on 08/31
REG- MCQ- Was manageable
SIMS- Deadly
Looks like in the new model, SIM’s are the key. The issue is there no enough study material available to practice SIM's.
Time allocation is a huge issue. I am sure many will run out by the time they get to SIM’s and panic (which happened to me).
Praying as hard as I can for 75; can’t afford to keep taking it. My mind is numbing.

Lynn1234MemberThis question is for anyone who could answer…
I understand there are pretest questions on the exam…but my question is what if you get those pretest questions correct? Do those points not count since they are pretest??
September 2, 2011 at 10:04 am #371703
kb24Participant@lynn
No, they don't count. Here's a link to the scoring explanation if you'd like more info.
FAR 4/1/11 - 89
AUD 4/15/11 - 85
REG 4/29/11 - 80
BEC 5/13/11 - 85September 2, 2011 at 5:28 pm #371704
Erica HParticipantHi all!
Just my two cents on the REG sims. Yes, they are brutal most of the time. When I was still in the game I tended to do better on sims overall than on MCQ, however.
I think if I could pin that on anything in particular it would be time management. If you leave yourself more time than you think you really need for the sims (ie. 1/3 of the allotted exam time or thereabouts) you will have enough time to scan all the sims, do the easiest ones first and as efficiently as possible, and then spend time using the research tab to dig up as much information as you can on the sims where you feel a little bit light on actual knowledge/details.
Think about the very grass roots basics of what you study in taxation, and those items will be 90% of what you see on sims most likely. S-Corp returns- how does a K-1 flow through to federal taxable income or self-employment income? Or partnership K-1's, same thing? Pensions/IRA deductions/income- how are those applied to individuals? Itemized deductions- how do they work? Consider which items really lend themselves to sims and/or change very little from year to year (basic tax knowledge application) and those are the items you're most likely to see on sims.
They key is knowing how to apply the basics principles and having the time to look up the obscure parts. That will get you 90% of the way through pretty much every sim I saw during my stints at REG. Were the sims I had hard? Absolutely! I felt enormous pressure when I saw some of them. But I allowed enough time to look up 80% of the information that I had any questions about, and that made a huge difference.
AUD - 92
FAR - 73, 82
REG - 72, 82
BEC - 84 DONE!!!!!! 🙂September 3, 2011 at 9:16 pm #371705
anonymousParticipantJust started studying for REG, and it's the most miserable thing I've ever done. (By “just started studying” I mean I've been putting it off. Which is really bad, since I'm on a really tight schedule.) While it may be just that I took three exams this past window and have no idea what to expect in terms of scores and I'm worn out and frustrated, I do also just hate taxes. With a passion. And there's so much nit-picky materials, I have no idea strategy-wise how to hit it. I'm thinking flashcards (I used them for BEC and FAR, skipped them for audit) but I've been finding it really hard to find all the fact-bits appropriate for flashcarding.
Does anybody have any advice on how to go about learning the material?

PeanutParticipantWecandothis, for REG take really intense notes from the lectures, and do an insane amount of MCQs. Purchasing a second test bank prepared me very well for the MCQs on the exam. Thats really awesome you did three exams in a window. I might have to do that next window! Three down one to go, you got this! REG is a beast, good luck!!!

pabernal30ParticipantOk, this REG stuff is really getting to me. The past exam I did really well In MC in every section (except property transactions which was average) and I ended up getting a 72. Of course I blew it with simulations. I remember I did not complete a single one. It was a disaster. Now I took REG for the my third time and I went through something very similar. I felt ok only with two of the simulations and I got the research question wrong. It seems like I will fail for the third time and I have no idea what else to do. Did anyone used the Becker's Final Review? If so, are the SIM similar to those from the real test? I've used Becker and I do really well on the SIM but these SIM have nothing to do with the real thing. I also practiced with Wiley but the same crab. If you used Becker's final review or any other program that does a good job with SIM PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

PhillyPhanatic311Participantpabernal30:
How to attack REG SIMS…..
1- They most certainly test on tax topics, which include calculations of some sort. So I suggest, study triple time on Individual, Partnership, Corp/S-Corp, and EGT (Estate, Gift and Trust) taxation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2- Know BASIS in and freakin out, (sorry the philly coming out in me) for all tax topic's- see #1!!!!!
3- Allow at least 1 and a half hours for SIMS. You will need it, as other's have mentioned many many times, you most likely will get 2 or maybe three off the freakin wall topics in which you need to use the RESEARCH TAB to locate the code section that relates.
4- I used Wiley book, Wiley test-bank, Gleim test-bank (ONLY THE CPA RELATED QUESTIONS, NOT THE SUPPLEMENTAL CRAP THEY PUT ON THERE), and Becker Flash Cards (HELPED THE HELL OUT OF ME). If you are like me, I always do extremely well on MC, but really suck apples on the SIMS this guide should help, I hope.
5- #4 Is only a suggetion and a money saver too. #1, #2, #3 are the real deal!!!
6- My credentials….. 15X test taker…..BEC=1, FAR=5, AUD=5, REG=4….SCORES all between 68-74. 74 Three Times.
7- I know it's redundant, but concepts are another key to the SIMS. The Flash Cards believe it or not really helped me, but we all learn in a different way. You can practice all the SIMS you want, with whatever study program you want and the test will always win, unless you know the concepts its tough to do well on the sims. That is why #1,2, and 3 are so important, they almost always test on those specific topics, and basis for sure.
I'm waiting on REG. This last time I sat 8/25/2011 was the ONLY TIME I left feeling I did quite well, hopefully 75 well.
I usually just read on this site, never post, but you seem quite pissed, so I hope I help you.
Good Luck.
By the way, REG WILL BE MY LAST SECTION AND I'M DONE. Hope that doesn't sound too confident??
