kteire1005MemberHey, everyone. I just found this site and was wondering how you guys best study for REG. I am about to take it for the FOURTH time on July 2 and don't know what else to try! I did Becker originally, since I get it free through work. The first two times, I watched the lectures, did the homework right after, and then took lots of progress tests in the couple weeks leading up to the exam. The third time I skipped the lectures, and read the book instead, re-writing out every section I didn't understand, and then did the homework at the end of every chapter, and did progress tests. This time, I've gotten the Wiley test bank and am just doing practice quizzes of 50 questions and 3 simulations until I get through them all twice. I also have been writing down why answers are wrong and things to go back and look up again. And, I have the Becker flashcards, which I studying with when I'm not at home or work, and highlighting important parts and flagging important cards. Are there any other suggestions of what I could be doing differently?? I really need this to be my last test!!
Thanks!

mikempf10MemberI am in a very similar situation, about to take Reg for the fourth time. I have the Becker materials, but nothing else. Would you recommend Wiley? I have heard of Yaeger, Gleim, and Wiley and not sure what is best as a supplement to Becker. I look forward to readers responses to your questions. Thank you.

AnonymousInactiveI took REG 3x. For my last time, I read each chapter in Becker twice and did all the MCQs/SIMs in passmaster about 3-4 times. I read the ethics/legal responsibility portion few more times as it's heavily tested.
I used Wiley testbank and found it very helpful. I only did tax portion of MCQs/SIMs as I didn't have enough time to do b-law portion.
Don't underestimate b-law and study each topic. I think Becker does great job with blaw, while Wiley does great job with tax…so make sure to do its MCQs.
Good Luck!!
PS: Can't stress enough the importance of reading!!! Really really read each chapter and apply it on MCQs/SIMs.

AnonymousInactiveI was curious if I should be OK using the 2011 Becker materials after updating the text from the website? Does the 2012 exams focus on the 2011 changes (phase outs, deduction limits, ect.) or 2012? I was also told that the phase outs and deduction limits are rarely tested since they change every year and that I should focus on the core concepts/exceptions. Is is true? Thanks!

AnonymousInactiveI passed reg, which was my last section.
I used Becker 2011 and gave myself 3.5 Weeks to study, which I wouldn't recommend to most, unless you feel you have a strong tax technical background and are familiar with IRS practice and procedure (I have an MST and have 5 years experience in tax with a big four firm).
With regards to Becker 2011 –
My negatives:
I feel they are extremely poor at covering flow-thru entity taxation (pship/S corp). Everything they cover in self study lecture is very top level and the supporting text reference material is as comparatively vague. For these topics I watched the lectures and did the MC/practice sims Becker provides but felt (and still feel) that they failed to prepare me properly for this material. I went back and studied my mst notes from my partnership course and may not have passed short of this independent study. For the amount of money Becker charges I think they have a duty to do a better job in this area.
My positives:
Everything else. Becker's coverage of all remaining material was superb and prepared me as best as possible for this section. However, as mentioned above, all this may have been irrelevant if I didn't take the liberty to self study the above topics…
Good luck to those still at the grind, keep up the hard work and stay dedicated!!!

AnonymousInactive@futuremdcpa Whatever you believe is “enough” do that much and then some more.
These exams can be tricky, I used Yaeger, I watched the videos while writing good notes, then I did a bunch of MCP's for a few weeks. You can see that my most recent score was a 74. I felt that I had a pretty good grip on the information going in, but I came up short. I didn't have time to rewrite my notes and wish that I did.
Everyone learns differently and has different strengths and weaknesses. I do believe that doing MCP's was the most useful for me – and SIM's if you take the time to actually learn the concept in the SIM. Also, be sure some of your study is under timed conditions, time can be a challenge for many people and you will want to leave plenty of time for your SIMS.
Just be careful about what you think you know, look at how you're scoring and be honest. Do you truly grasp the concept? Also, for REG don't neglect seemingly small factoids that are not conceptual. They may help you pick up points here and there.
It looks like you haven't taken any of the other exams yet? This exam will help set the bar and you will better know how much study it will take to pass the others.
Don't ease up on the studies because you're tired, bored or feeling comfortable with the information. Seriously push it. Best of luck!

shiggity80MemberI'm taking REG at the end of August and it'll be my last section. I'll be honest here, I have no motivation to study right now. I've been very fortunate and blessed to have passed FAR, AUD, and BEC on my first try in successive testing windows and I'm really happy that I only have 1 left, even though it's the most dreaded one for me, but I'm just so exhausted from studying and taking exams.
Not only that, but it's summer time, I just recently passed BEC a few weeks ago, and I have lots of gaming to catch up on. It is DAMN hard to get myself to start studying again. Work hasn't been too bad which is why I need to really take advantage of this time.
I think I'll give myself the rest of this week to just relax and then I'll kick it into high gear next week.
Good luck to all who are studying for REG.

readytopassMemberHello – I was wondering: Why is Unemployment compensation included in Gross Income & Workers Compensation excluded?
If the idea behind unemployment being included, being that it is because they are hypothetical wages, shouldn't worker's comp be included under the same logic?
Is worker's comp not compensation for an employee while they are out of work due to damages?
Am I missing something?
