Recommended prep time for REG is 5-6 weeks @ 20 hours a week.

Trevor-
Without disclosing too much–what was your REG experience like compared to the other tests? I take REG tomorrow and I can't decide if I'm going to get blindsided like everyone has been, or if the exam is comparable to the other 3. Did you walk out feeling like you got owned or did you feel OK?
I've felt pretty decent walking out of my other 3 exams–just trying to gauge what I should expect on this exam. To me, it seems like this is the exam where everyone get's dominated but ends up scoring better than expected. Let me know what you think.
Thanks!

Gleim ReviewOctober 28, 2010 at 1:04 pm #258524TrevorParticipantFor me I judge the exams as being “fair” or “not fair” and what I mean by this is was the information covered during my review and were the questions easy to understand. So far the only test I had deemed “not fair” was BEC… I think that they ask questions in a misleading way… as for REG it was fair, there were a couple of questions that I was fuzzy on what they were asking for, other than that it was straight forward. I know if I did not pass it was simply because I did not devote enough time to reviewing the material because everything on the test I had seen before in the lectures. I feel very similar to my FAR exam, which I had little doubt that I failed coming out of the exam, but as time went on waiting for my score I feel a little better each day. I can pick things out of the exam I got wrong, but I know there is quite a bit I got right.
For me, the simulations help my score… I am not a good multiple choice test taker, so being able to work a problem and writing a memo fits into what I do best.
As far as being dominated… I have NEVER felt like with more time/commitment I couldn't hit a home run. This was no different for REG.
BEC: 73,81(7/6/2010); AUD: 75(5/24/2010); FAR: 76(8/31/2010); REG: 77 (10/18/2010) - DONE!!!!
October 28, 2010 at 2:59 pm #258525Florida_CandidateParticipantI'm starting to feel much better. I've reviewed through R5 and now have two Becker chapters left (2/3 of the b. law section left) and then I”ll be ready for my “final final” review (read: take a simulated final in Becker and see how I do). I'm starting to feel like “I just want this over with” and usually when I start feeling that way it means I'm close to being “comfortable” with the material lol.

Florida – Congrats! on making headway on your studies….
So I'm going to shot for about 3 hrs tonight, 2 tomorrow night, 4 on Saturday, and then probably not much more until next Wednesday…. I'll probably do something at work tomorrow at lunch too, but not sure how much I'll get done… It's been nice to be out on client, but I feel like I'm slacking when I'm at lunch with the other people and not studying… I'm aiming to get through the rest of tax stuff this weekend, so then I can do the law sections next week, and then I have 1 week to do final review, but I'm feeling very good on the tax stuff, so I'm going to try and blow through the rest of it… At least in my last week I have 3 full days to study, but may take off some more time if necessary….

October 29, 2010 at 1:11 am #258528wannabetxacctntParticipantHey guys,
Am taking the reg exam on Monday-November 1st, so far I feel pretty comfy with all the tax stuff since I'm getting my masters intax right now, however Business Law is just not sitting in my brain. I feel like I have a good grasp of fed security regulations, auditor liab and ethics and responsibility and contract law-haven't even touch commercial paper, negotiable instruments, bankruptcy and am iffy about insurance…
I have b/w tomorrow and Monday morning to do the rest of business law and last minute cramming and take a practice exam. How much time do you think I should devote to B law? it just seems SO dry and boring and the q's are always atleast 2 paragraphs long:( please advice…thanks!

October 29, 2010 at 4:24 pm #258529Bob Moritz, CPAParticipantJust got through with the REG exam and I have to say that it was a good exam. Wouldn't say that I aced it but felt comfortable enough for a 75 hopefully. I would say the exam covered most of the material I studied using becker, but wouldn't say it focused more on one part than another. Now just packing for my cruise Sunday then I'll be back in a week to prepare to attempt to conquer audit

Have fun on your cruise! I just booked my flight to Italy the other day for May 10-19!!! super excited.

Trevor, congrats! May is definitely the best time to visit Italy, great weather, not so many tourist, and cities are not shut down like in August.

But it was my first section and I didn't really know what to expect. But what's done is done for me…on to BEC.
October 29, 2010 at 7:13 pm #258533TrevorParticipant@italianCPA – thanks, yea that is what I heard. My Alma-mater did a study abroad program in Florence that I was not able to take advantage of… I am surprising my wife with the trip for Christmas (if I can hold off that long…), we will be flying into Rome, staying there a couple of nights then taking a train to Florence and stay there for a couple of nights. From there we will head back south to the Amalfi Coast for 3 nights before returning to rome for one last night! should be a great trip. I am fascinated with all of the history in Italy (much of Europe for that matter). I figured do it while we are young because it will be difficult to travel abroad when we have kids…
Any suggestions on MUST SEES?

October 29, 2010 at 8:04 pm #258534italianCPAParticipantWell, I'm from Milan and by definition I don't like Rome, even though I admit that there are a few monuments there to see 🙂
Seriously, Italy has so many places. Where you are going is awesome. Italy has some 70% of the world's art assets, so it's impossible to see it all.
I would say that Venice is a must see, so it's Milan. Sicily is nice too, and Sardinia has Caribbean-like water and beaches.

October 29, 2010 at 10:14 pm #258536michelle119Participant@Trevor – So I did study abroad, in Rome in the Spring of 2009, most amazing 4 months of my life… So I have a few picks for you in both Rome and Florence, sadly I did not make it to Milan, that is on my list of places to go this summer, my sister is studying abroad in Florence, so taking my vacation there after busy season and such.
In Rome, definitely do the Vatican Museums to see the St. Peter's, definitely gorgeous and worth the long walk around everything, also try to go to the top of the Vatican, I forget exactly what it was but you get amazing views. You also get great views from Castello del Angelo. There is a restaurant near Cipro metro stop, which is the one nearest to the Vatican, its called, Ristorante La Rustichella. They only do dinner and I don't think open until 7pm, probably the best place I had dinner though in Rome, they have a cold appetizer bar, it was amazing! The owner's name is Rudy and was extremely friendly and helped me and my family out. There was also an amazing gelato place next door or at least on that block, but you may want to hit that up then go do the vatican and then cut back for dinner. Definitely go to the Trastevere region in Southern Rome, has some amazingly good restaurants. If your into bars and such, there is a really good bar crawl through Rome, it starts at the Spanish steps and I think is on Thursday nights…
In Florence, visit the Duomo, and there was a park across the river from the main city that was on top a hill, it provided amazing views, I think it was piazza michaelangelo, but not 100% sure… I only spent a couple days there….I remember doing a lot of walking….

How heavily have you guys studied this? I just got Jeff's notes and so far I haven't noticed any of this mentioned (although I haven't covered them in detail yet). The Wiley book goes into such detail (as usual…).
Is it more of a “be aware of but don't waste your time” kind of topic? It's not the most thrilling read either that's for sure..
