Recommended prep time for REG is 5-6 weeks @ 20 hours a week.

Thanks Florida! I got in a full hour at lunch today as my lunch buddy that I usually sit with and shovel food in my mouth with was out at a client… unfortunately/fortunately I will be out on the field starting wednesday this week until I'm not sure…. I'm excited to actually get to do some real work at work, beyond scanning and filing, but I think I'll be losing some study time… oh well off to finish my paper and do some studying for my midterm/cpa exam… thankfully my two classes are individual and corporate tax so I can sort of double count hours, hehe

REG 11/12 - 96October 26, 2010 at 12:17 am #258509AnonymousInactiveHey all,
So I have passed 3 parts of the CPA exam so far and am on to regulation. I am taking Reg on 11/24. For the previous exams I have not really been too strapped for time because I was working a normal work week. My department is now about to be down 2 accountants during a month end close and I am already working between 9 and 12 hour days. I really do not want to take REG in 2011. Can people who were in a similar situation please advise?
October 26, 2010 at 12:47 am #258510michelle119Participantbfar – I don't think REG is changing that much in 2011, beyond the tax updates. I think somewhere I read ethics is going away and its gaining business structures from BEC…. I could be wrong, though since I'm trying not to look at what is going on in 2011 and focusing on what I have to accomplish now… If you can't get in time to study between now and then, reschedule to 2011 and sit then, provided you won't lose your NTS fees… if you can't push it out to Jan on the same NTS then just sit in November and study what you can, you wouldn't be losing much…
So just finished my paper due tomorrow, to see that I have another assignment due, aka read one of my professor's papers and read it through and look for errors…. then maybe squeezing in an hour of studying for my midterm on wednesday… god where does the time go in the day??

Which specific topics are heavily tested?
Thank you very much!

I take REG in 52 hours!!!! My LAST EXAM!!! Ahhhhhh I'm freaking out, yet I can't wait to get it over with at the same time.
At least I'll have a few weeks guaranteed no-studying while waiting for the score–cannot wait for my first study-free weekend in 7 months! Hot tub and beers on Friday night??? I think so!!!!!

Gleim ReviewOctober 27, 2010 at 3:05 pm #258513AnonymousInactiveThis question has been asked a few times but I'm not quite sure what the answer is..
I'm using the 2010 Wiley book to prep for my 11/24 REG exam. All the info in the book refers to tax year 2009 and at the beginning of the book there is a note stating “2009 tax changes tested on 2010 REG Exam”. Does this mean that 2010 rules, limits, etc are NOT tested on the 2010 exam? Confused… Why would Wiley not include the 2010 changes in his 2010 book if they are indeed tested?
Thanks for the help!
October 27, 2010 at 3:37 pm #258514TrevorParticipantNot to give to much away (break the ethics code) or sway your studying, but in my experience the limits were not too important. On a couple of questions they gave me an assumed limit, in maybe 1 or 2 cases did I need to recall a limit…

October 27, 2010 at 4:00 pm #258515AnonymousInactiveThanks Trevor. It's funny how there is so much uncertainty over this fact (i.e. 2009 vs. 2010). I wonder what is fair game for the examiners to test… If you need a certain deduction limit for a calculation, you cetainly need to make sure that you are using the correct year. Hm… Odd.
October 27, 2010 at 4:46 pm #258516Florida_CandidateParticipantI just took a practice exam for Chapters 1-4 in Becker (all the taxation ones) and scored a 92%… I'm feeling a bit better now and am still on my study schedule. Time to start contract law today! w00t w00t!

REG-99 (11/3)October 27, 2010 at 6:06 pm #258517TrevorParticipantYea there is a lot of uncertainty… I think the general rule is that they can only begin to test certain material if it has been effective for 6 months, which would make most 2010 stuff unusable. This is stricly my opinion of course. They would most likely focus on 2008 and 2009. Again my experience was they would ask a question with a year and then say “assuming $XX,XXX limit/exclusion for the year…” Go through the multiple choice questions provided by Wiley, Gliem, or Becker and I would bet there are not too many that ask you to know what the standard deduction for 2009 is… or provide you with a taxpayer who reaches phaseout limits and expects that you know those limits… I think that they will test you on these limits in another fashion or types of questions… Give you AGI and ask you to calculate the medical deduction given a some facts. Remember that you have the 7.5% floor and if you don't back that out watch for answer A… lol Yaeger comment “you can choose A, but only if its the right answer” meaning when you pick A be sure you are right, never guess A…

Hope to be done with R7 sometime Sunday & to start my review after that.

October 28, 2010 at 1:26 am #258521michelle119ParticipantWell, got back from my midterm tonight and now need to probably get through 16hrs+ of studying for both cpa exam and another midterm next week before Tuesday next week. I'm probably going to start skipping some of my classes to get in a few more hours of studying, they are taped anyways so I can tune in while they're going on and “listen”… I can't believe its already almost November!!
