I am planning on taking REG March 6th. Currently, I am only using Becker and just finished R5.I feel like the BLAW material is pretty clear but chapter 2, 3 and 4 are more confusing for me. Does anyone have any advice on how to pass REG? I was considering going through the rest of the BLAW chapters quickly and then completely re-doing chapter 3+4 for review..what do you guys think? Thanks!

I've taken REG twice and I found out my score from my second attempt today. I got a 72. I got a 71 the first time, and now I feel absolutely crushed getting pretty much the same score my second time around. I'm using Becker study materials and I feel like I've pretty much memorized the answers. I don't know what else I should do. Does anyone have any study tips, recommendations for tutors or should I switch study materials? Tax was always my worst, so I'm not surprised I'm struggling.

    – Thanks!

I would recommend focusing on tax. It makes up the large majority of the test considering both Simulations and MCQs.

Hammer out those NINJA MCQs. I'm right there with ya.

60-70% is tax so really focus on those sections. Really try to understand ethics as well since it's only one section and it is a significant chunk of the test. BLAW I'd skim through twice if you have the time. I felt fairly confused the first time through but going through it again cleared a lot of things up. There's so much material and it's only a small piece so if you have limited time I'd just focus on tax. I feel like simulations help more than mcqs only because you understand the concepts better vs memorizing a,b,c,d with repetition. You should really try to have a basic understanding of everything though, it worked well for me.

You've definitely got a lot of time to go finish BLaw and go back to chapters 3 and 4. I'm in the same boat as you but I only started studying last week, I'm on Ch 3 currently and should hopefully be done with 4 by Sunday or so. Test on 3/9

    Good luck!

I would suggest spending a reasonable time on BLAW and do a bunch of MCQs because you WILL see them on your exam. I felt like Becker really limits the number of MCQs on BLAW section when you do a progress test after you've completed all of the chapters so I spent some time doing MCQs just for chapters 5 through 8. I don't think there is anything bad in memorizing answers in BLAW section. You can ask a BLAW question in only so many ways. If you remember the right answer you will quickly eliminate the other 3 options.

In regards to the tax – doing SIMs will help you identify your weak areas. I failed on my first REG attempt with a 74 and after drilling SIMs and doing progress tests for 3 weeks I passed with an 86. I did all of them, reset all of my answers and then did them again.

Also, I highly recommend joining and participating the REG study group. Following the discussion and trying to answer questions posted by other candidates will really test your knowledge. REG study group was a huge part of my prep before the retake.

    Good luck!

The blaw questions are like raisins in a pudding and very random.

But if you do not know BASIS like the back of your hand, you will not pass. Understanding the tax implications of donating assets to a corporation and distributions, the fact that a partnership is a flow through entity and the implications of donation of assets and distributions as well.

I supplemented Becker with a book on Corporate Taxation I rented from Amazon. I needed a fundamental understanding of why things occured the way they did. IRS website works well too if you know how to use it.

If you dont know basis in all its glorious forms, you will fail. Plain and simple.

Thanks for the responses guys! Would you recommend that I go through the BLAW relatively quickly and give myself another week on top of my 2 weeks to review to go through chap 3 + 4 again? Or just keep doing progress tests from all of the chapters for review?
