Quick Question on Study Strategy

I’ve never studied or taken REG before, and I was wondering if I should basically use the same strategy as I did on the other exams:

I used Becker and focused on the MCQs and Sims. I never actually read the book (only the highlighted parts). I also created my own notes for just the important mnemonics to memorize.

I’m thinking maybe I should actually read the textbook this time, but I still feel like that time could be better spent on MCQs & Sims. I want to pass comfortably. I don’t need to pass with a 90+; that’s inefficiency and a waste of time in my book.

Maybe go over the materials at least once, then move on to your next step. In my opinion, do what works.

    It begins with a 75

Well charlie I only have one piece of advice…do what YOU have been doing to pass. You are 3 parts down so you know what it takes to get the job done.

becker is good stuff…would reading the book hurt? obviously not. Will is guarantee you will pass? nope…just make sure you are comfortable with the material and do your thing.

    Good Luck!

    BEC-75!
    AUD-84!
    REG-78!
    FAR-83!
    Ethics-Passed!
    Experience-Got that too

Definitely do what works for you, but for me I've found this method helpful:

    1)Full Lecture

2)Read chapter sub-section (add notes in addition to what Gearty/Pete already penned in and highlight as needed)

3)Take MCQs for related book sub-section

    4)Continue through chapter steps 2-3

5)SIMS once all sub-sections within chapter are done

6)Optional MCQs during final review weeks so as not to get beaten down with too many questions in any given week – got to keep moving

Reading and text is useful – there are millions of ways concepts, theory, and material can be tested in MCQs but the book provides the basis for all that information, not to mention casts a net around what you actually need to know. For REG specifically, I think it's a must that you break up your studying into Tax and Business Law and look at it as two distinct pieces. This is especially important during that final review when you're planning how you want to spend your time and set up your last run through.

    @jsmithsae

Thanks for the advice. I was just making sure REG wasn't like BEC where the questions are all over the place (meaning they will test some material not covered in the lectures, but is in the textbook).

Time to skip reading the textbook again; definitely saves me valuable study time.
