Phase-outs

    Dammit one of these phase-outs just popped up on a NINJA session.

    Did you guys study the phase-out limits for various deductions and adjustments?

    I left them out, since they don’t seem to occur very often at all. Might however memorize the IRA one, since it’s now occurred more than once.

    Ignore them. All of them. They are a waste of time. You MIGHT see one or two on your exam but memorizing them all is pointless.

    What about the maximum amounts allowed for each of the adjustments to arrive at AGI? For example, the $2500 for student loan interest before phaseouts?

    @Sullivan

    Those are more relevant than the phase-outs. The phase-outs are a complete joke and there are so many that no one would possibly remember them all. The max deductible amounts are easier to remember and not nearly as much of a ridiculously specific calculation.

    There are a lot of phaseouts in the Ninja MCQ so you are going to see them frequently. My suggestion would be to make note of the phaseout amounts just to get through the MCQ without it ruining your average, but try to solve the problem as if they had given you the phaseout amount in the problem. I agree that trying to remember them all is a waste of time.

    Agree, makes sense.

    As I wrote, “they don't seem to occur very often at all”. Not sure if we're on the same test bank but I am using NINJA and have gone through all questions by now, and around 5 or so have included detailed calculations on phaseouts = not very much out of over 1,900 questions.

    Well if that's all you've seen then that's great and you shouldn't need to worry about your average at all. I remember a lot more questions with phase outs when I studied with Ninja in Q2…
