Phase-outs are among the few things I knew solidly going into REG, and while everyones test is different I will say it didn't help me a huge amount. The rule of thumb is that you don't have to know any amount which changes annually. I use Roger CPA review and there were a few specific phase outs which he said we should remember.

Here is what I found in all the questions (including Wiley, etc)… the answer choices were such that you could reverse engineer it and get the answers IF you at least knew there was a phase out amount at all. Does that make sense?

I needed to know a phaseout amount to calculate a whopping one MCQ, so as far as cost/benefit…I agree with the above about not wasting your time.

    BEC: (4/2012) 88
    AUD: (5/2012) 91
    REG: (8/2012) 82
    FAR: (1/2013) 78 🙂

As said above, I wouldn't waste much time trying on phase outs. I spent way too much time on this. I probably would have done a lot better if I had focused more on tax concepts rather than detailed phase outs and brackets.

NIU CPA Review Correspondence is awesome!

I passed all four sections on the first attempt

During the Becker lectures, Tim says he will let you know which specific phaseouts to memorize. However, it seems like he talks about and makes you highlight all of them. I don't recall him specifying which ones to memorize. Did I miss something?

They didn't make up a huge part of my test, but I think knowing some phase-out information was helpful in a few of my MQs, and I think even one of the simulations.

What I did was make a few study sheets for things I was having trouble remembering. I had one sheet where I listed out the various phase-outs and looked over it a couple of times right before going into the exam.

    REG - 94
    BEC - 86
    AUD - 89
    FAR - 85
