I’ve taken REG twice in the past two months and failed with a 74 and 73. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’ve been using Becker and the NINJA notes. Should I invest in Becker final review?
This section is so frustrating and I’m at a loss for what I should do. Any suggestions?

Wiley Test Bank. Ebrace it. Answer every question. Do every sim. Review all of the questions you miss. The questions are harder in the test bank than on the exam.

Wife, 2 kids and a jobFebruary 5, 2013 at 6:16 pm #396855AnonymousInactiveYou're making me nervous. I took REG in November and, again, in January. I haven't received my score but I did find that studying the Becker simulations taught me some new things this go-around. There are some tidbits of information like what types insruance payments are deductible, when transfer of title and risk of loss are the same or different, how to apply Section 179 to depreciation calculation, etc… that I wouldn't have memorized if it weren't for studying the sims. Have you spent time using the Becker sims for additional knowledge on basic question? The definetly hit on some questions that the book/MCQ doesn't emphasize much.

Wife, 2 kids and a jobFebruary 5, 2013 at 6:20 pm #396857STATMemberI just passed my Reg re-take with a 77. I used Yaeger Cram, after using Yaeger and failing my first try with a 67. Other thing I did different this go around that was immensely helpful was using Wiley test bank and doing all the mcqs, but doing them by topic. First go around, I tried doing them all at once randomly. Do them by topic.
And in my opinion, the questions aren't harder than they are on the exam. Not if you get a block of difficult questions.
February 5, 2013 at 6:24 pm #396858AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone! I think I will look into getting the Wiley test bank. I need a different angle big time! Another fail will give me a heart attack.
@apple I did got through all the Becker SIMS, but probably not as thoroughly as a I could have. I just go to the point where I did them so many times that they weren't really relevant to me anymore. The Becker SIMS are so straight forward as compared to the ones on the exam. The exam SIMS are ridiculous.

From what i experienced Becker did a very good job with the MCQ. However, their Sims lack compared to what else is out there. I used the Wiley 24 hour Free trial period right before my test and their sims are very very good. I know that there was 2 sims on my actual test that worked pretty close to what Wiley has. Also from talking with other people as well, they have experienced this same exact thing. I would keep using Becker for MCQ but maybe look into the Wiley test bank for the Sims. I know jeff has a deal on the code if you want to save some money.

February 6, 2013 at 12:12 am #396862mdrobbinMemberDoes anyone suggest skipping the Wiley Text MCQ's and going straight to the Test Bank? I always find the Test Bank more useful but feel like I might miss something if I don't look at the text MCQ's at all.
I'm curious if anyone decided to skip the Wiley Text MCQ's and just go straight for the Test Bank… if so, how did that work out?
Thanks!

February 6, 2013 at 5:01 am #396863General_LedgerParticipantI suggest skim through the Individual, Partnership, and Corp tax for Wiley. I sorta of memorized those topic from Becker (at least the ones Tim G told us to highlight) and I STILL find useful/important minor detail from Wiley textbook. And you won't find those details in Becker's MCQs.
Law topics are mostly MCQ on the exam so the Law sections from Becker is sufficient enough for the exam from my experience.

February 6, 2013 at 6:12 am #396864AnonymousInactiveReg so far was the toughest for me to take. Becker i think is not enough to pass Reg. You must supplement with wiley sims. Please get it and you wont regret it. And make sure to allocate enough time to do them during exam. Cannot stress this enough. And know the basis calculations by heart.
February 6, 2013 at 6:37 pm #396865kels417MemberHi everyone! I am REALLY needing some help staying confident. Found out I failed REG again today for the 6th time! Granted that has been spread out over 2 years. I did take it in November 2012 and got a 70 and then January with the 72. I walked out of it in January thinking that there was no way i passed. The simulations were nearly impossible. Felt pretty confident on the multiple choice. Does anyone have suggestions/ideas for improving on the simulations? I find it to be so hard to study for since there are so many topics they can test on and you never know how detailed they'll be. Starting to worry about the time frame. Do not want to lose credit for either of my exams passed. Planning on retaking REG beginning of April and giving FAR a shot at the end of May.
I used Becker and Ninja notes. Plus wrote my own notes. And Becker flashcards. HELP!

FAR - 72, 66, 69, 67February 6, 2013 at 6:51 pm #396866wizards8507Participant@kels417, time is your biggest asset on the simulations. Really familiarize yourself with the literature. Learn to “let go” on your multiple choice questions you're not sure about so you aren't trying to cram the Simulations into half an hour. The answers are all out there in the text if you know where to look for them.
One tip I learned for all Sims, regardless of section, is NEVER leave anything blank. If you're down to five minutes left and know you won't finish, go plug zeroes into all the empty cells.

February 6, 2013 at 6:52 pm #396867swa309MemberI just found out that I passed REG with a 90 yesterday. I also had success with the other three sections as reflected in my signature. Sometimes I think that I am lucky I didn't fail in any of my attempts. Other times, however, I believe that my method of studying was the trick.
I can only comment on the resource I used – Becker. I can't reflect on Wiley, Ninja or Yaeger because I've never used them. I watched the lectures once, highlighted what I was told, and afterwards typed my own notes (most of what was highlighted and some topics that were not but stuck out to me). I would then complete the homework MCQ after each lecture. Once I got through each lecture and the homework assignments one time, I would go back and do all of the problems over again. I'd devote 2 months to each test. I'd finish the lectures/initial run of the homeworks within 2 weeks, leaving on average about 6 weeks to nail everything down. I would constantly work the MCQ's. Over and over and over. By the time my exams came, I was at the point where I would know the answer to about 95% of the MCQ's after reading the question, without even looking at the answers. I could even glance at most questions without even reading it and know that the answer was “B” (for example). It was important at this point for me to understand WHY the answer was what it was, not just memorizing “B” being correct. I wouldn't spend much time during this period working on SIMS. I wouldn't touch the SIMS for a second time until about a week before exam day.
If I had to estimate, I would say that I probably worked each of the Becker MCQ's about 30 times through. I was fortunate to be able to study in the office for about 5 hours a week. I also spent about 12-14 hours over the weekends studying. I rarely studied at night after work.
I know that each candidate's schedule is different but putting the time in and having patience when beating the MCQ's into your brain will really pay off. At least it did for me..good luck.

February 7, 2013 at 3:57 am #396868kels417Member@wizards8507 thank you for the advice. I do tend to start rushing through the sims once i get to them because I've spent a bit too much time on the multiple choice. Did you use the literature then to help you figure out what you needed to do? I have found that when i try that, i spend more time looking for the exact information than i would have spent just trying my best. Ugh. It's all just so frustrating and time consuming. I plan to start studying again tomorrow. These next 2 months should be a blast. Busy season + studying. Should have taken these exams more seriously while i was still a student and had free time!
